Cameron Women's Basketball Opens Exhibition Season at Tulsa

TULSA, Okla. – Golden Hurricane sophomore Taleya Mayberry scored 26 points as the University of Tulsa defeated Cameron University 76-52 in the first women's basketball exhibition game of the season Saturday evening in Donald W. Reynolds Center.

The Aggies were led by newcomer Sabelle Diata who scored 15 points on 6 of 12 shooting from the field. Diata collected 6 rebounds in the losing effort. Josie Stewart, last year's Lone Star Conference Newcomer of the Year, contributed 9 points on 4 for 6 shooting.

TU shot 42 percent from the field, which included a 7-of-14 effort from beyond the three-point line, and the Golden Hurricane outrebounded the Aggies 45-38.

Mayberry finished 12-for-15 from the field and added to her game-high 26 points with five assists, four rebounds and an astonishing eight steals in a game-high 30 minutes of action.

Cameron maintained a slim advantage throughout the early going, but a Mayberry layup with 10:34 to play in the opening half gave TU an 18-17 lead, which turned out to be an advantage the home team would never again relinquish.

Senior Kensey Hall, Loren McDaniel and Amanda Mason helped power Tulsa with an 8-0 run to push the lead to 24-17, and the Golden Hurricane cruised to a 38-27 halftime advantage.

Tulsa came out for the second half and continued to increase its lead. The advantage for the home team grew to as many as 26 points as the Golden Hurricane looked strong in its first game of the 2010-11 campaign.

Aggie Head Coach Tom Webb was upbeat after the game, "I really liked the tempo early on, but we turned the ball over way too many times. We didn't really handle their pressure very well, but all in all, it was a learning experience for our kids and we learned a lot from it. We'll go to Norman, which will be another challenge, and then we will be ready to take on some DII teams, which we are all excited about."

Cameron plays it's second exhibition game on Wednesday, Nov. 10, when the Aggies travel to Norman, Okla. to take on Division I power, the Oklahoma Sooners, at Lloyd Noble Arena. Tip-off is at 7:00 pm.
