Cameron In 5th Place At North Alabama Spring Classic
March 26, 2012MUSCLE SHOALS, Ala. (March 26, 2012) — Cameron’s men’s golf team is sitting comfortably in 5th place with a 598 after the first 36 holes of the North Alabama Spring Classic, being played at the Fighting Joe Golf Club in Muscle Shoals, Alabama. The 7,126-yard, par-72 golf club is the same location of last year’s national championship.
“We got off to a slow start, but I am pleased so far,” said Head Coach Jerry Hrnciar. “This is a really tough course, but luckily four of the guys I brought played here last year (at the national championship). The greens were very tough today, but they were for everyone I’m sure. May be just let it get to us.”
Trey Lawson posted the high score for CU on day one, finishing in a tie for 12th place with a 147 (+3). Michael Kelly was close behind with a 149 (+5) to tie for 21st, followed by Kregg Wood in a tie for 27th with a 150 (+6). Garrett Smith shot a 153 (+9) to tie for 41st and Austin Weaver shot a 159 (+15) to tie for 70th, rounding out Cameron’s day.
“We really need to improve on our par 5’s,” Hrnciar said. “If we can do that, we will be in much better shape. We can definitely make it into the top three if we play well. We also need to finish ahead of Midwestern to help us regionally.”
MSU is currently in third place with a 595, trailing Wilmington (587) and the University of North Alabama (573).
The tournament will conclude tomorrow with an early morning shotgun start.
