Cameron Women Off to Good Start at Conference Championships
April 17, 2012TROPHY CLUB, Texas (April 10, 2012) — Cameron’s women’s golf team finished strong at the Conference Championships MOnday, shooting a 1st round 316 to finish in 4th place after 18 holes. The tournament is being played at the Trophy Club Golf Club.“We finished well after a slow start,” said Head Coach Rick Goodwin. “I think we were a little tight and nervous at the start of the day, but after a few holes that stuff wears off. Then we got after it.”
Lindsey Alexander led the Black and Gold with a 77 to tie for 12th place, followed by Aleesha Holden in a tie for 14th place with a 79. Shelby Anderson and Candice Swartz both shot 80’s to tie for 17th place. And fresh off being named 2nd Team All-Conference, Jaqueline Strickland tied for 30th with an 83.
“We definitely have some shots we can pick up tomorrow,” Goodwin said. “The greens played a lot faster today than they did yesterday, so that’s something we well be aware of tomorrow. But all together, I am proud. I’d like to get into third place tomorrow. I think that’s something that is within reach.”
Tarleton State took the lead into the clubhouse with a 399, followed by Midwestern State with a 302. Texas A&M-Commerce shot a 315, one stroke ahead of CU’s 316, for 3rd place.
MSU’s Kendra Whittley is leading the race for the individual title with a 71, followed by Incarnate Word’s Flower Castillo with a 72. Three players are tied for 3rd place with a 73.
The final 18 will be played tomorrow, beginning at 8 a.m.
