Lady Aggies fall on SOSU buzzer-beater
February 21, 2004DURANT, Okla. (Feb. 21) - Randi Wilson's jumper as time expired lifted Southeastern Oklahoma to a 58-56 victory over the Cameron women's basketball team on Saturday at SOSU's Bloomer Sullivan Gymnasium.
Coach Dick Halterman's Lady Aggies had trailed by six with under three minutes to play, before sophomore guard Brittany Cooksey drained back-to-back three-pointers to tie the score. The loss drops Cameron to 13-12 overall and 6-4 in Lone Star Conference North Division play. The Lady Aggies will look to rebound on Feb. 26, when they travel to Edmond to face Central Oklahoma.
Cameron led virtually the entire first half, scoring the first seven points of the game and building the lead to as many as nine.
The Lady Aggies again led by nine at 30-21 early in the second half on a jumper by sophomore Melisa Steen. But Southeastern launched a 31-10 scoring run from there, capped by three straight three-pointers by the Lady Savages around the nine-minute mark that made it 52-40.
Cameron chisled away at the lead, finally drawing even on consecutive three-pointers by Cooksey. After a blocked shot by freshman Tiffany Williams, Cooksey drilled the second trey to make it 56-56 with 1:50 to play.
Southeastern missed its next two three-point attempts, giving the Lady Aggies the ball and a chance to win in the final 30 seconds. But a steal by Jessica Hocker with 26 seconds left put the ball back in the Lady Savages hands, and after an SOSU timeout Wilson hit the game-winner as the buzzer sounded.
