Lady Aggies fall to No. 12 Angelo StateJanuary 15, 2005
LAWTON, Okla. (Jan. 15) - The Cameron women's basketball team led for nearly three-quarters of Saturday's Lone Star Conference crossover matchup with Angelo State. But the 12th-ranked Rambelles rallied to shot 58.3 percent in the second half and escaped with a 67-61 win.
ASU (12-1) took its first lead of the game with 11:29 remaining in the second half and never looked back, collecting its 12th straight win. Cameron lost for the second straight outing, falling to 6-9.
Christina Buben led the Lady Aggies with a game-high 15 points and seven rebounds in the game. Chelsea Turner added 14 points, including 11 in the first half, off the bench for Cameron. Five players reached double-digits for the Rambelles, but Cameron's stingy defense held ASU All-America center Natalja Tsurbakova to just 12 points, eight under her season average. Sharon Ballenger and Asheia Haynes also scored a dozen for the 'Belles.
Cameron jumped out to a quick 9-0 lead against ASU and led by as many as 14 points in the opening period. A Buben jumper capped a 16-3 run that put the Lady Aggies up 29-15 with just under five mintues to play before intermission. Angleo State quickly cut the lead, but Cameron still led ASU 31-27 at the break.
Taylor Campbell gave the Lady Aggies an eight-point lead with a three-pointer that made it 41-33 with 15:31 left in the second half. But the Rambelles answered with a 16-3 run build a five-point lead. Cameron took a brief lead with just over four minutes to play when Christina Buben charged the lane to grab an offensive rebound and was fouled on the putback that tied the score. Buben sank the ensuing free throw and Cameron led 57-56.
But Angelo State scored the next six points and Cameron managed just one field goal the rest of the way. Cameron will look to break back into the win column next week, opening Lone Star Conference North Division play on the road at East Central on Jan. 20. The Lady Aggies return home to host Southeastern Oklahoma in an LSC North matchup on Saturday, Jan. 22.
