Aggies zap ZIas and win 62-47

LAWTON, Oklahoma (January 12) – This afternoon in Cameron’s Aggie Gym, the Cameron women’s basketball team (3-12) put on a very impressive showing in a 62-47 defeat of the Eastern New Mexico Zias (3-10). The Aggies outplayed ENMU in nearly every aspect of the game, and overcame a 37.7% team shooting percentage to take the victory. The game was CU’s final non-conference game this season.

“I thought that again our effort was really good. I thought the kids played hard, and I was pleased tonight with how our group played so well together,” Head Coach Kevin Hackerott said. “We shared the ball and I’m very pleased to get a win; especially at home in front of our fans who deserve it. They have been very loyal.”

The Aggies exchanged leads with the Zias for the first 8 minutes of the game, but then Cameron took control. They were up 34-28 at halftime and held the lead for the rest of the game. Cameron turned the ball over only 13 times, 5 less than ENMU, and out-rebounded their opponents 38-35. They also took 5 more shots than the Zias and only committed 14 fouls.

“I was really pleased in a few areas and we were accountable on the boards,” Coach Hackerott said. “I thought defensively we were very good tonight because every basket they got was a tough basket. They didn’t get any easy looks. I’m proud of our defense.”

Junior guard Jasmine Parr led the team offensively against ENMU, finishing with a team-high 19 points on 6-11 shooting. She also recorded 6 rebounds, 2 steals, and an assist in 38 minutes on the floor. Her .500 shooting percentage from three-point range was also a contributing factor in the victory.

“I’m real proud and pleased the whole way around,” Coach Hackerott said. “We will keep working to get better offensively though. Jasmine was really steady tonight and Sarah (Moore) has played two really good games in a row. She had a lot of energy, was really aggressive, and nearly got double-double.”

Moore, a senior forward, recorded 10 points on 5-6 shooting and came up with 9 key rebounds. She also recorded a block and a steal in only 19 minutes in the game. Her 4 offensive rebounds were very impressive.

Senior guard Tiffany Williams was the only other Aggie to have double-digit scoring numbers as she finished with 17 points on 6-15 shooting. Additionally she recorded 7 rebounds and 2 steals against the Zias. Williams played in 38 minutes in the game.

The senior leadership continued with senior guard Merrisa Martinuzzi and her team-high 7 assists. Martinuzzi spread the ball around very well tonight. Despite scoring just a single point and grabbing only 1 rebound, her assists really helped the Aggies to maintain their lead.

“Hopefully this win will give us a little momentum going into Lone Star Conference North play,” Coach Hackerott said. “Give ENMU credit though, they made a few runs. But our girls didn’t panic and all credit goes to them. I was really pleased with how hard they played together.”

The Aggies travel to Edmond, Oklahoma, next Saturday (January 19) to take on the rival Central Oklahoma Bronchos in their Lone Star Conference North Division opener. The game tips off at 2:00pm and will be televised nationally on the Internet courtesy of the NCAA. To view the game just visit www.ncaasports.com/dii and select the Cameron game from the menu.
