Aggies drive through Drovers

LAWTON, Oklahoma (November 27) – The Cameron Aggie women’s basketball team pressed on through a compelling game against the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma in their home-opening 79-65 win tonight in Aggie Gym. Their record now stands at 2-2.

The ladies played between games one and two of the inaugural Thanksgiving Classic hosted by the Cameron men’s basketball team this weekend.

Leading by two points late in the first half, CU was denied the lead at halftime thanks to a buzzer-beater three-point shot by USAO’s Annitra Walls. The desperation shot put the Aggies behind, 42-41 at the break.
In the second half, Cameron boosted ahead by scoring 15 points more than USAO, ending the game with a 14-point win.

Head Coach Tom Webb seemed pleased with the outcome of the game, although he expressed a few points he would still like to work on.

“We were pleased with our offensive execution and ability to push the basketball, but we have a long way to go defensively,” Webb said. “We still don’t understand the importance of guarding the ball.”

The Aggies beat USAO in field goal percentage (47.6%-44.8%) and free throw percentage (76.5%-64.3%), and only trailed 3-point field goal percentage by one percent (35.3%-36.4%). The Aggies had 28 rebounds for the night, six of which were by junior guard Lyndie NeVille who also scored 19 points in the game.

“The most positive thing that really stood out was the ability to share the basketball,” Coach Webb said. “We had 4 kids with double figures, which is saying a lot.”

NeVille (19), Josie Stewart (18), Luv Rattler (12), and Alexis Williams (11) all finished with double-digit scoring numbers for CU.

Five Aggies finished with at least 4 rebounds, and the team outnumbered the Drovers in steals by 5 (15-10) and in assists by 10 (26-16).

“We were really, really pleased with the crowd” Coach Webb said, “They brought a lot of emotion for us, and it helped our kids to bring a lot of emotion to the game. It’s always good to win in front of a crowd like this.”

The Aggie women’s basketball team plays their first home double-header with the men’s team this Monday (November 30) against Hillsdale Free Will Baptist. Women’s basketball tips off at 6:00pm, and the men’s team follows at 8:00pm in the Aggie Gym.
