'Hawks down Aggies in LSC opener
January 13, 2010LAWTON, Oklahoma (January 13) – Lone Star Conference North Division play opened up tonight with a loss for the Cameron Aggie women’s basketball team (4-10, 0-1 LSC North). CU fell to the second-place RiverHawks of Northeastern State University (12-4, 1-0 LSC North) in front of a fantastic crowd in Aggie Gym. This evening’s contest was scored 73-49.
“We knew NSU was going to be a very tough opponent,” Head Coach Tom Webb said. “They played us very hard and took advantage of our miscues. We also didn’t shoot the ball very well either.”
CU and NSU played very close in the first half, but in the second the visitors pulled way ahead. At halftime the ‘Hawks owned just a three-point, 26-23 advantage. The Aggies were outscored 47-26 in the final frame to seal the defeat.
“In the first half we played alright, but we couldn’t keep up in the second half,” Coach Webb said. “We were only 4-18 from three-point range, and when you have a tough night shooting it’s going to be hard to win.”
The Black and Gold shot at a 28.3% (13-46) clip from the floor tonight with 32 rebounds, while their opponents put up a 38.5% (20-52) shooting percentage with 42 boards.
“Our defense was good at times,” Coach Webb said. “To force 17 turnovers and almost 10 steals is a pretty good night.”
Both teams finished with 17 turnovers, and the RiverHawks recorded one more steal (10-9) and block (2-1) than the Aggies.
Josie Stewart and Alexis Williams finished with the CU team-high in scoring with 11 points each. Stewart went 2-12 from the floor while Williams went 3-7. The latter was the only Aggie to sink more than two baskets in the game.
CU hits the road for two more LSC North games, starting this Saturday (January 16). At 2:00pm the Aggies and Texas A&M-Commerce Lions tip off in Commerce, Texas.
