Aggies play hard against #17 Bronchos

LAWTON, Oklahoma (February 21) – The Cameron Aggie women’s basketball team (6-19, 1-11 LSC North) came up just short today in their annual Homecoming game. Against the nationally-ranked #17 Central Oklahoma Bronchos (21-4, 11-1 LSC North), the Aggies lost by the score 62-47. Today’s rivalry game was very competitive but in the end UCO was just too much for a strong CU squad.

“Our kids did a great job of battling but UCO was too good for us,” Head Coach Tom Webb said. “We had a strong night under the boards and I’m glad that our team played hard throughout the game.”

CU out-rebounded UCO in the game 46-33, but the Bronchos shot a higher shooting percentage 37.0% (22-58) to 30.8% (16-52). The Aggies also showed improved ball control by only recording 18 turnovers. CU bested UCO beyond the three-point line today with a game-high 37.5% (6-16) three-point shooting percentage.

“We were able to do a few things well today and I liked how we responded against one of the top teams in the nation,” Coach Webb said. “We kept it close for a while and UCO really only started to pull away in the end.”

Today’s game featured three ties and three lead changes, and the score at halftime had UCO up 34-25. The Aggies began the game with the lead but both teams battled back and forth for much of the first half. Cameron made a strong run at the lead early in the second half, but an 11-2 UCO run put the game out of reach for good.

“I thought we did a better job today against UCO than we did the last time we faced them” Coach Webb said. “Taking into account everything else we are facing as a team, I thought we played pretty well today.”

The Aggies have two games remaining on the season. Cameron’s next action is Wednesday (February 25) at 6:00pm in Durant, Oklahoma, where the Aggies will face off with the Southeastern Oklahoma State Savage Storm.

Next Saturday (February 28) the Aggies play host to the Tigers of East Central University in the final game of the season. Next weekend CU and ECU tip off at 2:00pm in the Aggie Gym. Cameron’s annual “Senior Day” ceremony will take place prior to the game.
