Aggies thump Jets in season opener
November 17, 2009WICHITA, Kansas (November 17) – For the second straight year the Cameron Aggie women’s basketball team (1-0) and head coach Tom Webb begin their season with a win. Opening up the 2009-2010 season tonight on the road, the Aggies pounded the Newman University Jets (0-2) by the score 70-51. CU dominated throughout and led for 36:11 of tonight’s 40-minute contest.
“Anytime you win you feel good,” Coach Webb said. “Defensively we did a good job tonight, but offensively we still have spurts where we don’t function yet.”
Newcomers Alexis Williams, Luv Rattler, and Josie Stewart started for the Aggies alongside returner Tera Tremayne and two-sport athlete Amber Schroer (volleyball). In total, 11 women saw action tonight for the Black and Gold.
Cameron took control down low and out-rebounded Newman 40-29. Both teams finished with a pair of blocks, 8 steals, and 19 personal fouls, but it was the Aggies who converted the fouls into points by going 23-28 (82.1%) from the line. The Jets were only able to muster 10-18 (55.6%) from the charity stripe.
“It was a nice win and we are very pleased at how hard we played,” Coach Webb said. “We out-rebounded them big and that was one of our goals heading into the game.”
From the floor the teams had similar stats as CU went 21-53 (39.6%) and NU went 19-52 (36.5%). Additionally, Cameron made 5 three-pointers while Newman sunk 3.
Junior guard Lyndie NeVille came off the bench to lead the Aggies in scoring with 15 total points. Her production came primarily from the free throw line where she was 13-14. From the field NeVille was 1-2. She also contributed 2 rebounds, 2 assists, and a steal in her 11 minutes of play.
Schroer and Stewart tied for the team-high in rebounding with 8 apiece. The duo also added 7 and 9 points, respectively.
Tremayne had a nice night defensively and tied for the game-high in steals with 4. She played in 35 minutes and also contributed a team-high 3 assists.
“All in all it’s a very good confidence builder,” Coach Webb said.
Cameron hits the road again this week to participate in the University of West Florida Invitational in Pensacola, Florida (November 20-21). CU will take on host WFU at the event, as well as the University of Lynn.
