CU's fantastic comeback not enough

LAWTON, Oklahoma (January 7) – Cameron’s women’s basketball team (4-10) lost an overtime thriller to a very good Texas A&M-Kingsville squad (11-3) tonight in the Aggie Gym. The final score was 84-78 in favor of the Javelinas. CU stormed back in the second half and almost pulled off a huge Lone Star Conference Crossover upset.

“You can’t say enough about the heart of our team and the way we fought back into the game,” Head Coach Tom Webb said. “Texas A&M-Kingsville is a very good team and we had a shot to beat them in overtime.”

Little by little the Aggies chipped away at the Javelina lead, finally pulling ahead by a point with 31 seconds left in the second half. Cameron was only able to hold onto their first lead of the game for 18 seconds before Texas A&M-Kingsville hit a three-pointer to go up 66-64.

Josie Stewart tried to hit the tying basket, but was fouled with a mere 3 seconds left. The first-year Aggie came up clutch and hit both of her free throws to tie the game at 66-66.

CU was out-scored 41-22 in the first half, but won the second half 44-25 to send the game into a third frame. The Javs won the final period 18-12 to seal the victory.

“We had good urgency tonight and never gave up,” Coach Webb said. “We shot the ball well and also out-rebounded them in a big way. This was a good game and even though we lost, hopefully we can use the positives from today when we open up LSC North play next week.”

Stewart led the team offensively with 24 points on 7-15 shooting, and she was 10-12 from the foul line. Luv Rattler was right behind her with 22 points on 7-13 shooting. Rattler was 3-6 from long-range and a perfect 5-5 from the free throw line.

With 14 points on 5-10 shooting, Alexis Williams was the only other Aggies to finish with double-digit scoring numbers.

Both Stewart and Tera Tremayne finished the game with a team-high 8 rebounds.

“We still need to clean up a few things, but I like the direction our team is heading going into conference play,” Coach Webb said. “We’ve got the most important part of our schedule coming up.”

CU opens up LSC North Division play at home next Wednesday (January 13) at 6:00pm in the Aggie Gym against the RiverHawks of Northeastern State University.
