First place 'Hawks top Aggies, 71-42
February 24, 2010TAHLEQUAH, Oklahoma (February 24) – The Northeastern State RiverHawks all but locked up first place in the Lone Star Conference North Division with a 71-42 defeat of the Cameron Aggies tonight in Tahlequah. The CU women’s basketball team (8-18, 4-9 LSC-N) put up a good fight, but the ‘Hawks (23-5, 12-1) took control down the stretch.
Northeastern State is nationally ranked at #29 in the nation, and won the season’s earlier match-up in the Aggie Gym by the score 73-49.
“There is a reason NSU is in first place,” Head Coach Tom Webb said. “They played so hard and shot the ball great; it was a tough night as a whole. We did a good job on the glass and only got out-rebounded 34-33. We just need to continue to be more aggressive on the offensive end.”
Cameron held the lead for the first 7 minutes of the game, but then Northeastern State went on a 33-10 run to take a 43-21 advantage into halftime.
Tonight’s game moved quickly as a very low 21 total fouls were called. NSU was 8-10 at the foul line, while CU was just 1-1.
“We only got to the line once tonight so it was an interesting game,” Coach Webb said. “They let them play a little bit.”
With 19 points on 8-13 shooting, junior Josie Stewart was the lone Aggie to put up double-digits. She secured an impressive double-double with a game-high 11 rebounds. Her assist and steal also contributed.
As a team the Aggies were 35.4% (17-48) from the floor, while the RiverHawks shot a 43.1% (25-58) field goal percentage.
Cameron closes out the 2009-2010 season this Saturday (February 27) at home in the Aggie Gym. At 2:00pm that afternoon the Aggie women host the Lions of Texas A&M-Commerce. A Senior Day ceremony will take place prior to the game for CU’s senior players.
“This Saturday we’ll want to play hard for our seniors,” Coach Webb said. “You want to give them everything they’ve given you in their time here.”
