UCO pulls away from CU, 87-66
February 13, 2010EDMOND, Oklahoma (February 13) – A late run pushed a surging Central Oklahoma Bronchos (18-5, 9-1 LSC-N) women’s basketball team past the Cameron Aggies (7-16, 3-7 LSC-N) tonight in Edmond. UCO defeated CU 87-66 to sweep the season series. UCO won the season’s earlier match-up 89-69, and tied a school record with their eighth straight win this evening.
Cameron was down 40-30 at halftime, but a strong push to start the second half pulled the Aggies back within single digits. CU chipped away at the UCO lead for the first half of the second frame, until a 23-7 run put the Bronchos ahead for good.
“UCO is a good basketball team; they pass it well and they beat us on the glass,” Head Coach Tom Webb said. “With ten minutes to go we were only down 62-54 and that’s when the game turned. We continued to battle but they extended the lead in a hurry.”
The loss put CU back at three-games out of playoff contention with four games to go. Two of the Aggies’ remaining games are at home in the Aggie Gym (February 20, 27).
Junior guard Josie Stewart led the Aggies in scoring with a game-high 23 points on 6-15 shooting, including 3-10 from long-range and 8-9 from the foul line. Stewart also added a team-high 6 rebounds and 4 assists.
With 12 and 11 points, respectively, Alexis Williams and Luv Rattler were CU’s other two double-digit scorers. Rattler tied Stewart’s team-high board total as well.
“We have to work hard everyday to improve as a team and as individuals and if we do that we’ll be in good shape,” Coach Webb said. “One game is not how you evaluate the season, so hopefully we can learn from this and move on.”
CU travels to Durant, Oklahoma, next Wednesday (February 17) to take on the Savage Storm of Southeastern Oklahoma State. CU and SOSU tip off at 6:00pm that evening.
