Bronchos drop Aggie women, 89-69

LAWTON, Oklahoma (January 23) – Cameron’s women’s basketball team (4-13, 0-4 LSC-N) attempted to take down the tough UCO Lady Bronchos (12-5, 3-1 LSC-N) in a pivotal Lone Star Conference North Division showdown today, but unfortunately came up short, 89-69. The Aggies could not handle the offensive and defensive attacks of Central Oklahoma, and their valiant effort was just not enough to pull out the home win.

After the game CU head coach Tom Webb commented, “I am proud of the girls today. They played hard and with a lot of intensity, we just have to get tougher out there on the hardwood.”

Cameron played solidly for most of the game, but the Bronchos’ points in the paint proved to be too much for the Aggies. UCO maintained their large advantage by shooting a blistering 90.0% from the free throw line, making it very hard for CU to catch up in the game.

“Our girls took care of the ball much better this week and almost cut our turnovers in half; those are the types of improvements you have to make if you want to win ball games.” Coach Webb said. “Our girls understand what they need to do to win this next game and I think we can get ready to see a team who is hungry to win next Wednesday.”

CU and UCO turned the ball over only 17 times each in this matchup, but the Aggies were out-rebounded 35-20. The Aggie ladies finished with 6 steals and 2 blocked shots, to go along with 13 assists. Furthermore, the Aggies were whistled 25 times, to the Bronchos 20.

Cameron shot strongly from the field, putting up a 40.0% (22-55) team shooting percentage. UCO shot 55.8% (29-52) from the field but made 28 points on free throws compared to the Aggies’ 18.

The Aggies were better from the 3-point line as they went 7-21 (33.3%) from long range. The Bronchos were just 3-17 (17.6%) from three-point range.

Junior Josie Stewart, freshman Alexis Williams, and senior Luv Rattler were the three Aggies to finish with double-digit scoring numbers, scoring 22, 12, and 17 points respectively.

Stewart has now led the Aggies in scoring in 12 consecutive games, and 14 of 17 games on the season. She was named this week’s Aggie of the Week and a video interview of Stewart discussing the award and her season can be found on the official website of Cameron Athletics: goaggies.cameron.edu

Tera Tremayne once again led the team under the boards with 6 total rebounds.

Also, Rattler led the team with 8 assists.

Cameron stays home this week to host the Savage Storm of Southeastern Oklahoma State. CU and SOSU face off at 6:00pm on Wednesday (January 27) in the Aggie Gym.

“For this next game we have to come ready to play because Southeastern is a tough opponent and they will pressure us the whole game,” Coach Webb said. “This weekend we are glad to be home, and if our girls can handle the pressure from Southeastern and keep up the intensity we have had lately, we should do well.”
