'Dawgs storm back against Aggies

LAWTON, Oklahoma (February 3) – Southwestern Oklahoma State’s Lady Bulldogs (2-18, 2-5 LSC-N) upset the Cameron Aggie women’s basketball team (5-15, 1-6 LSC-N) tonight in the Aggie Gym, coming from behind to win 74-66. CU led for most of tonight’s Lone Star Conference North Division battle, but couldn’t come through and match their 2008-2009 win total.

“We have to be tougher,” Head Coach Tom Webb said. “At end of the day we had a lead, we just couldn’t take care of it. We need to have better execution on both ends.”

CU took the lead from the opening tip on a huge three-pointer by Luv Rattler. The Aggies maintained their lead throughout the first half and took a comfortable 35-26 lead into the locker room at halftime.

Cameron enjoyed a number of 7-, 8-, and 9-point leads in the game, leading by as many as 11 points. It wasn’t until there was a mere 5 minutes left in the second half that the Lady ‘Dawgs began to storm back.

A 20-12 run gave Southwestern their first lead of the game; unfortunately it was one they would not relinquish. There were just 2 ties and 1 lead change in the hard-fought game.

The Aggies came within 3 points of tying the game down the stretch, but could never regain the lead. The ‘Dawgs ended the game on an 18-10 run to close out the come-from-behind victory.

“We need to get tougher and we have got to be better against one-on-one defenders,” Coach Webb said. “We got out-rebounded by a team that was -10 on the glass coming into the game. We need to be better on the glass.”

Rattler led the way for the Aggies offensively with a game-high 25 points on 9-10 shooting, including 3-6 from long-range and 4-6 from the foul line. She unseated fellow Aggie Josie Stewart who had led the Black and Gold in scoring for the previous 15 consecutive games.

With 11 points each, Stewart and Lyndie NeVille were the only other CU players to finish with double-digit scoring numbers.

Stewart once again led the team under the boards with 7 rebounds. Tera Tremayne and Alexis Williams finished with 6 and 5 rebounds, respectively.

CU heads to Weatherford, Oklahoma, this weekend for round two of this week’s games against SWOSU. On Saturday (February 3), the Aggies and Lady Bulldogs tip off at 2:00pm.

The Aggie women have just three home games left this season. CU next hosts an opponent in the Aggie Gym next Wednesday (February 10) when the Texas Woman’s Pioneers come to town for a 7:00pm game.
