MEN'S GOLF RALLIES TO SECOND PLACE FINISH BEHIND PORTER'S 68 AT 2011 LSC CHAMPIONSHIPS
Brady Porter was also named to the All-Tournament team and finished tied for 5th.
SAN ANTONIO – The Cameron Aggies men’s golf team surged ahead in the final round of the 2011 Lone Star Conference Men’s Golf Championships to finish in second place behind Brady Porter’s four-under 68 on Wednesday at the par-72, 7,100-yard Randolph Oaks Golf Club on the Randolph Air Force Base.
Porter was also named to the All-Tournament team after finishing in a tie for 5th place with a 215 (-1) total score. It was his best finish of the season, topping his 13th place finish at The Ryan Palmer Foundation Invitational in October.
The Aggies battled with rival Abilene Christian for most of the day, trading strokes and positions for the No. 2 and No. 3 spots, but it was the final hole that decided the finishing order of two of the LSC’s top teams.
On the 18th, the Ags turned in a pair of birdies while the Wildcats posted a pair of bogeys that proved to be the difference. CU finished with a 54-hole total of 868 (+4) while ACU finished in third at 870 (+6).
“We played hard and fought back at the very end,” said Head Coach Jerry Hrnciar. “It was very exciting and a great way to end the event.”
In the third round, the Aggies had their best showing of the event as they shot 281 (-7) with three team members turning in sub-par scores.
Behind Porter, Trey Lawson and Jason Timmis, as they had done all event, turned in identical rounds to finish at an even-par 216 (76-70-70) and tied for 7th.
Kregg Wood finished the event with a seven-over 223 (75-75-73) and tied for 17th. Teammate Michael Kelly posted his lowest round of the event, a two-over 74, today and finished tied for 29th with an 11-over 227 (76-77-74).
Central Oklahoma took the team and individual crown after leading for all 54 holes. They turned in a five-under 859 (284-296-279) while Colby Shrum took the individual award after posting a nine-under 207 for the event.
Next up for the Aggies is the NCAA South Central/Midwest Super Regional in Georgetown, Kentucky. Action tees off at Cherry Blossom Golf Club on May 2nd.
