DURANT, Oklahoma (February 25) – Of all the milestones set tonight by the Cameron Aggie men’s basketball team (13-13, 6-5 LSC North), the most important was CU’s clinching of a postseason berth for the first time since the 1997-1998 season. With a 64-58 road victory over the Southeastern Oklahoma State Savage Storm (5-22, 2-10 LSC North), the Aggies secured a spot in this year’s Lone Star Conference Championship tournament.
“This is huge for our program, to make the postseason so quickly,” Head Coach Wade Alexander said. “Give all the credit to the guys on our team. They bought into what we are doing here. We don’t have anybody that can individually take over games. When they play together and listen, we can accomplish big things.”
Cameron also improved their school record LSC North Division win total to 6 victories. The previous record had been 4 wins. Additionally, with 13 wins on the season CU has recorded their highest win total since the 2004-2005 season. The Aggies won both games with the Savage Storm this year for the sweep.
“We played well enough to win, but we didn’t play that well,” Coach Alexander said. “It was pretty tight and I think our guys were a little nervous. We played just well enough to stay ahead.”
The Aggies also owe a thank you to the Bulldogs of Southwestern Oklahoma State, who tonight knocked off the Northeastern State RiverHawks. An NSU loss was the other main ingredient in CU’s postseason berth.
It took Cameron until 9:00 mark in the first half to finally gain control tonight. The teams swapped leads for much of the first frame which also included 5 ties. CU out-scored SOSU in both halves and had a 33-28 lead at halftime.
“SOSU came to play; no team will give it to you in this conference,” Coach Alexander said. “They fought us hard and probably played a little better than us. We just made more shots.”
The Aggies out-shot the Savage Storm, 40.7% (22-54) to 36.8% (21-57) in the game. SOSU managed to out-rebound CU, 41-34, but Cameron committed fewer turnovers 13-11. As a team, the Aggies shot a solid 42.9% (6-14) from three-point range. Both teams committed 15 personal fouls.
Senior guard/forward Mekaile Reed led all scorers tonight with a game-high 23 points on 7-15 shooting. He also contributed 5 rebounds, a block, and a steal in 33 minutes of play.
Having a great night under the boards was junior forward Kallan Glasgow who finished with a game-high 14 rebounds. Glasgow was close to a double-double as he also added 8 points on 4-11 shooting, in addition to a pair of steals, an assist, and a block in a team-high 37 minutes.
Cameron’s only other player to score in double-digits was senior guard Roosevelt “Rey” Lovett who finished with 16 points on 6-11 shooting, including an impressive 4-9 from three-point range. He also added a rebound in his 24 minutes on the floor.
CU closes out the 2008-2009 regular season this weekend at home in the Aggie Gym. This Saturday (February 28), Cameron hosts the East Central Tigers at 4:00pm.
“We are going to come out and play hard on Saturday,” Coach Alexander said. “We have a lot to play for still, and we want to go into the playoffs with a win. Now we just get ready for ECU.”
Lone Star Conference postseason tournament seeding, scheduling, and other information will be available Saturday evening once the regular season comes to a close.
