SAN ANGELO, Texas (February 13) – The 2010 season finally began for the nationally-ranked #28 Cameron Aggie baseball team (3-1, 3-1 LSC)… and it could not have started much better. After waiting two weeks to begin their year, CU traveled south this weekend and took 3 of 4 from the #18 Rams of Angelo State (5-5, 1-3 LSC).
“This was a huge win for us,” Head Coach Todd Holland said. “Losing the ASU series last year could have been what kept us out of the regional tournament, so it’s nice to win this series 3-1 and get it out of the way. It is very encouraging that we beat the #18 team in the country after not having played a game yet this season.”
CU won both games on Friday, winning game one 8-4 and game two 8-7 in extra (11) innings. The Rams bounced back to win Saturday’s opener 19-9, and the Aggies exacted revenge in the series finale with a 20-6 blowout.
“We just came out and controlled the whole weekend,” Coach Holland said. “We scored a lot of runs and had good offensive production. We ran into a little speed bump pitching-wise in game three, but our pitchers will get better as we move forward in the season.”
Alex Lyons and Codi Harshman had huge weekends for CU at the dish, with both players going 10-19 for a .526 batting average. Lyons knocked in an amazing 10 RBI to lead the team, with Harshman’s 7 RBI right behind. Both men also added a home run.
From the mound, Keith Powell (1-0) and Justin Watley (1-0) had similar weekends as both went 1-0 with a perfect 0.00 earned run average. Powell threw a trio of strikeouts, while Watley added one.
Pitcher Logan Grimes (1-0) was responsible for CU’s other ‘W’ from the mound, winning game four with an 8.10 earned run average.
“The whole team stepped up this weekend,” Coach Holland said. “We hit well, got some home runs, stole bases; we even did all the little things right.”
Cameron hosts Eastern New Mexico at McCord Field next weekend for their 2010 home-opening series. CU and ENMU match up at 1:00pm on Friday (February 19), at 12/2:00pm on Saturday, and 12:00pm on Sunday.
CU makes it four home games in a row with a 12:30/2:30pm double-header against the University of Arkansas-Fort Smith on Monday (February 22). This series was originally scheduled for February 15.
