SPRINGFIELD, Missouri (March 14) - The nationally-ranked Cameron Aggie men’s tennis team split two matches on the road over the weekend. The #12 Aggies began the weekend with a win by defeating the Bearcats of Northwest Missouri State on Friday (March 13). On Saturday the Aggies battled the weather and the #8 Drury University Panthers and fell 6-3. With Friday’s 6-3 win and Saturday’s 6-3 loss, the Aggies’ record is now 10-6.
After basking in pleasant weather last weekend at home, the CU tennis team traveled north where they faced out-of-conference opponents and temperatures in the 40’s. But the weather didn’t faze the Aggies as they rolled to a victory in their first match. The Aggies took the #1 and #2 doubles matches 8-2 and 8-3 respectively but lost the tightly fought #3 match 9-8 (7-3).
“Friday we played pretty good. Even though we won, I felt we could have done better. We let up and we didn’t finish up some the matches the way I would have liked to,” said Coach James Helvey after the win.
Unfortunately, Cameron could not use Friday’s momentum to their advantage on Saturday. With a 10:00 a.m. start and frigid morning temperatures, the doubles matches were forced inside. The Aggies then lost all three doubles matches. The #1 and the #2 match were lost 8-6, while the #3 match was lost 8-5.
“You know, we had to play inside and that was hard for us. We don’t get to train inside a lot so we struggled. We played close and if one or two points go our way, those matches might end up in our favor,” Coach Helvey explained.
Despite being swept in doubles play, the Aggies managed to bounce back and split the singles matches with the Panthers. #1 Daniel Pazos, #3 Saman Samii, and #4 Diego Trojano all tallied wins for the Aggies. “I was very impressed with our singles play. I was especially happy with the effort after getting down early in the match,” expressed Coach Helvey.
The #12 Cameron Aggies travel to Topeka, Kansas next where they will face the #34 Washburn University Ichabods on March 16. The match is set to begin at 10:00 a.m. The next home match for the Aggies is scheduled for April 1st when they take on Dallas Baptist at 1:00 p.m.
