AGGIE MEN GO 1-2 IN TEXAS SWING

SAN ANTONIO, Texas (April 9) – The #23 Cameron Aggie men’s tennis team took a tough road trip through Texas this week and heads home with a 1-2 record in three matches. CU is now 15-7 on the season and has already locked up a bid to the NCAA Regional Championship tournament.

On Thursday the Cameron men were defeated by #18 St. Edward's by the score 5-2. CU came away with wins at #2 doubles (Peixoto/Barroetavena) and at #4 singles (Jorge Gerosi).

Friday the Black and Gold faced off against the #17 University of the Incarnate Word, and lost 5-0. The Aggies rallied back however, and went on to defeat St. Mary’s 5-3 in their weekend finale.

Coach James Helvey was optimistic about the team’s performance saying, “This road trip was tough and we lost to two really great teams and we also beat another good team. Overall we played pretty well but the other teams seemed to just be two steps ahead of us this weekend.”

Scores from the loss against the University of the Incarnate Word included Diego Troiano and Carlos Viscarra’s doubles loss against UIW’s Francisco Segura and Jose Arizpe 8-3.

Thomas Peixoto and Manuel Barroetavena’s lost in #2 doubles against UIW’s Max Moreau and Alex Wieland 8-4, and Jorge Gerosi and Jeff Sasser fell in the #3 match to UIW’s Carlos Olvera and Aidan DeLeon 8-6.

CU men then moved into singles play but were unable to pick up wins in the first two positions, leaving the overall score at 5-0 which gave the sweep to UIW.

In the weekend’s finale, the Aggie men came out and defeated St. Mary’ 5-3 pushing their overall record 15-7.

Highlights from the matches included wins from the #1 and #2 doubles spots with Diego Troiano/Carlos Viscarra and Thomas Peixoto/Manuel Barroetavena winning with scores of 8-2 and 9-8, respectively.

The big singles wins that pushed the Aggies to victory came from Manuel Barroetavena with a score of 6-3, 6-2, Jorge Gerosi’s 6-3, 6-2 win, and Thomas Peixoto’s victory-securing match which was scored 6-2, 7-5.

Thomas Peixoto did not only help secure the CU victory today, but he was named Lone Star Conference Player of the Week on Thursday by conference offices.

“We have two good matches coming up this next week that we have to prepare for both mentally and physically,” Coach Helvey said. “Both of these matches will be in regional play and we really need to go get them.”

The Aggie men’s tennis team will pick up their next matches at home at the CU Tennis Complex on April 13 at 1:00pm. That afternoon CU hosts Dallas Baptist University.
