Cameron stuns Texas Woman's in five for first tournament win since 2007

CANYON -- The Cameron volleyball team shook off the underdog status to stun Texas Woman's in five sets in the Lone Star Conference Tournament quarterfinal on Thursday afternoon. After missing the tournament the last two seasons Cameron won their first postseason match since the 2007 season.

Additionally, the Aggies have not beaten a TWU squad since 2011, and brings their overall record to 15-14; while the Pioneers fall to 18-10.

In set one, the Aggies came out on fire and stormed to a 10-3 lead on the Pioneers.  CU's early advantage and hitting .273 proved to be too much for TWU to overcome and Cameron took set one 25-21; Kendra Adams paced CU with six kills while Jordan Escobar added four.

With Cameron earning the early match lead, Texas Woman's battled back on the Aggies and hit .308 with 17 kills, while CU countered with .104 hitting and 13 kills in set two.  The Aggies did keep TWU honest and cut the lead to within two at the 23-21 mark but the Pioneers closed the set with a kill and a CU error to win the set, 25-21.

Cameron swung the momentum back in the third set and scored 13 unanswered points to steamroll TWU 25-11 to take the match advantage.   The Aggies nailed down a .423 hitting percentage with 13 kills and only made two errors, while TWU could only put together eight kills and a .065 hitting percentage.

Now with the set lead, Cameron trailed the Pioneers as many as five points until late where the Aggies closed the gap with a four unanswered to tie the set at 20 each.  Both teams traded points but a TWU used two service aces and a kills to push the match to a decisive set five with a 25-22 win.

In set five the Aggies took an early lead to snap a 3-3 tie and pulled out to an 11-6 lead on TWU.  Back-to-back points by TWU forced the Aggies to spend a timeout; CU inched closer to the finish line and got to match point with a four point lead.  However, TWU wasn't ready to go home and scored two in a row and CU used their final timeout.   After the stoppage, CU closed out the match with a kill from Escobar for the victory.

Escobar paced Cameron with 20 kills and a .459 hitting percentage, Kendra Adams added 15, and Evans chipped in 14.    The Aggies had four with double-figure digs with Kayla Hebert having 19, Lindsey McCauley and Cristina Viera both had 13, while Evans had 12 for a double-double.  Herbert led the Ags with 32 assists and Ingrid Boatman had 25.

Cameron was edged in hitting percentage .200, compared to TWU's .213, and assists 60 to 59.  The Aggies had the lead with 77 digs, while the Pioneers had 75.

The Aggies will move on to face Angelo State in the LSC tournament semifinal on Friday at 5 p.m.
