Cameron runners close out fall season in Lubbock

LUBBOCK, Texas – The Cameron cross country programs wrapped up the fall season with a solid performance at the NCAA Division II South Central Regional on Saturday morning in Lubbock, Texas.

Coming off a middle of the pack performance at the Lone Star Conference Championships a couple weeks ago, the Aggies had just one more chance to prove they belong at the top of the conference at the regional. However, they faced a tough field that not only included most of the LSC, but also a host of talented teams from the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.

The women's 6K race was the first to take place on the campus of Lubbock Christian University. Cameron finished in 21stplace (out of 25 teams) with 577 points and a time average of 24:21. In the program's short history, CU has finished 20th, 22nd, and now 21st at the regional race (the 2020 season did not have a normal postseason).

Like she has most of the fall, freshman Daesha Brathwaite led the group of seven Aggie runners, finishing in 90th place with a time of 23:23.50. She was the lone CU athlete to finish inside the top-100 as Vanesa Najar and Belle Vignes came in 107th and 109th with sub 24-minute times as well.

The RMAC dominated the women's race, with Adams State leading a group of five teams from the Colorado-based conference. DBU and West Texas A&M placed sixth and seventh with three more RMAC teams making up the rest of the top-10. Cameron finished ninth among the LSC teams competing.

ASU's Brianna Robles was the top finisher individually, finishing with a time of 20:24.30.

Cameron's men placed 18th in the men's 10K race on Saturday. They totaled 530 points and an average time of 33:54 as they finished nine spots back of their 2019 finish at the regional.

Saulo Yoel led the group of five Aggie runners with a 65th place finish and a time of 32:19.64. Edward Kipruto wasn't far behind his teammate in 86th with a 32:51.93 run time while Jason Cousineau also finished inside the top-100 with a time of 32:57.14. AJ Espino and Brian Easter placed 129th and 170th respectively.

In the men's race, it was another dominant performance by the RMAC with Colorado Mines placing first and four other teams in the conference making up the rest of the top-5. West Texas A&M, sixth place, was the lone LSC school in the top-10. The Aggies were seventh of the competing LSC schools.

The race winners was Dillon Powell from Mines with a time of 29:15.35.
