LAWTON, Okla. – Senior Josie Stewart scored 19 points and pulled down 12 rebounds and junior Nicole Pendarvis added 16 with six assists as the Cameron Aggies women’s basketball team (8-10, 1-3) fell at home to the Pioneers of Texas Woman’s University (13-6, 4-0) in Lone Star Conference North Division play on Saturday in Aggie Gym 70-61.
It was Stewart’s fifth double-double this season and second in as many games. The Aggies put three players into double figures with sophomore Alexis Williams adding 15 points who has now scored in double figures for the fifth consecutive game.
The back-and-forth affair featured ten ties and four lead changes with the roles being reversed by the half. The Aggies, down for the better part of the first, tied the game four times and went into the break up 32-30 on a strong, penetrating layup by Pendarvis.
For the Pioneers, the story of the first was the play of senior guard Kayla Weaver, the reigning LSC North Defensive Player of the Week. The 5-foot-11 guard posted 17 of the team’s first 25 points. At the third media time out, Head Coach
Tom Webb went to freshman Ali Brown, a former LSC North Defensive Player of the Week, to halt Weaver’s production.
Weaver added just two more points in the half and finished with 25 points and six rebounds to lead all scorers.
In the second stanza, TWU came out strong to tie the game at 32 all before an Aggies run stretched the lead to 40-34.
Junior forward Jeanee’ Thompson converted the three-point play to give the visitors their firs lead of the half at 43-42 with 12:35 remaining before Stewart sank the runner to give the Aggies their final lead of the game at 51-49 with 8:39 to go.
Brooke Shepherd drained a trey to flip the script and put the Pioneers’ in the drivers seat the rest of the way at 54-51. Head Coach Beth Jillson’s squad finished the game on a 21-10 run to remain undefeated in LSC North play and hand the Aggies their third consecutive loss.
For the night, the Aggies shot 47.9 percent (23-of-48) from the field and 84.6 percent (11-of-13) from the line. The Pioneers were slightly under at 46.3 percent (25-of-54) from the field and 71.4 percent (15-of-21) from the line.
The Aggies now hit the road as they head to Durant, Okla., to take on Southeastern Oklahoma on Wednesday, January 26. Tip off is set for 6 p.m.
