DURANT, Okla. – The Cameron Aggies women’s basketball team (8-11, 1-4 LSC North) rallied back from a 17 point deficit at half time but came up just short on the road Wednesday night at Lone Star Conference North Division foe Southeastern Oklahoma (12-5, 2-3 LSC North), 66-62.
Two Aggies went into double figures as senior Josie Stewart led all scorers, posting 24 points on 7-of-17 (41 percent) shooting including 5-of-12 (42 percent) from behind the arc. Junior point guard Nicole Pendarvis also tallied 12 points to go along with four rebounds.
The Savage Storm closed the half on a 19-5 run sparked by a Christin Nichols jump shot with 8:27 to go. A pair of missed threes kept the Aggies from closing as time ran down while two charity tosses by Stewart shrunk the lead to 15 just before the break. Southeastern’s Bailey Welch, who finished the game with 10 points, countered immediately to send the home squad into the break up 38-21.
After the break, Head Coach
Tom Webb’s squad emerged with a noticeable vigor and promptly got to work chipping away at the lead.
Back-to-back layups by Pendarvis and sophomore guard Alexis Williams cut the lead to 11 on the heels of a successful three-point play from Williams.
Freshman Ali Brown added two more from the line to bring the Aggies within single-digits with 11:09 to go for the first time since the early part of the first half.
Showing her senior leadership, Stewart penetrated the lane late in the game to spark a 10-0 run that saw the Aggies come within two with 1:53 left in the game, but that was as close as they would get.
However, with two opportunities to score in the waning seconds, CU caught the turnover bug and lost both attempts to send the game into overtime.
For Cameron, it is their fourth consecutive loss and third by single digits. They will look to get back on track Saturday, Jan. 29 as they play host to Texas A&M-Commerce in LSC Divisional play. Tip off in Aggie Gym is scheduled for 2 p.m. Tickets are available at the box office at Aggie Gym with doors opening at 1 p.m.
