Trio of Aggies Lead Cameron Back to Win; Defeats Abilene 75-61

LAWTON, Okla. – Three Aggie women scored at least 18 points to lead the Cameron Aggies (7-7) women’s basketball team back to the winning path as they defeated Lone Star Conference South Division opponent Abilene Christian (3-9) Saturday afternoon in Aggie Gym, 75-61.

Senior Josie Stewart led all scorers with 20 points on just a 4-of-17 (23-percent) shooting night. However, Stewart drained three shots from behind the arc and was a perfect 9-for-9 from the free throw line. Stewart also went into double-double territory as she pulled down 10 hard fought rebounds.

Sophomore Alexis Williams and junior Sabelle Diata scored 19 and 18 points, respectively, to complete the scoring triangle. For Diata, 17 of her 18 came in the first half as she was left to shoot openly out of her position in the low post zone, while Stewart and Williams provided the second half sparks.

The Aggies utilized a 17-6 run beginning with 12:35 remaining in the first to pull out to a 34-21 advantage. Their lead grew to as many as 17 in the first behind strong free throw shooting from Stewart, Williams and junior point guard Nicole Pendarvis.

The Wildcats were able to pull to within five on the heels of a 10-2 run with seven minutes remaining in the game but that was as close as they were able to get to knocking off the home-standing Aggies.

Autumn Whitaker and Kelsey Smith led the Wildcats with 16 and 15 points, respectively.

Cameron and Abilene posted identically shooting percentages of 36.7-percent on 22-of-60 (37-percent) shooting. The Aggie women dished the ball well and won the assist battle 19-10 while also shooting 41-percent (10-of-24) from behind the arc.

Cameron returns to action January 12 when they begin LSC North Division play against No. 7 Northeastern State. Tip off is scheduled for 6 p.m. in Aggie Gym.
