Lawton, Okla. (Sept. 18, 2011) ¬¬— In its first action since hosting the Aggie Showdown, Cameron’s cross country team came in sixth place with a total time of 2:14:25.95 in the 75th annual Oklahoma State Cowboy Jamboree. Freshman Hillary Kirwa notched his second win of the season individually, finishing the 8k race in 25:00.93, 25 seconds faster than the second place finisher.
“We finished sixth overall out of 30 schools,” said head coach Matt Aguero. “We did well. It’s the best finish we’ve had (Cameron finished 7th last year). Hillary ran awesome. He’s gonna’ be good.”
It was a team effort, coach said, adding that his top three ran a very strong race. Senior Brian Mulwo finished in 21st place (26:35.84), followed by junior Moses Kipkosgei in 24th place (26:42.78)
“We are still battling some injuries,” Aguero said. “If Julius had run and placed in the top 10, we would have been in second place.”
Here’s how the rest of the team faired: Alfonso Lozoya 27:45.85; Tyler Jacobs 28:10.12; Eli Hernandez 28:35.90 and Marcus Trevino 28:55.85.
The team will compete next at the University of Arkansas Chile Pepper Festival in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
