Lawton, Okla. (Oct. 22, 2011) — Cameron’s volleyball team earned an important conference victory Saturday, defeating Incarnate Word in four sets, 25-19, 21-25, 25-17 and 25-21. Head Coach Doug Tabbert said the victory will go a long way towards a potential conference playoff berth.
“It was one that we really needed for postseason opportunities,” he said. “We lit it up in (games) one and three (on offense).”
The Aggies (13-10, 7-8) started out fast, going up one game before faltering in the second. But the Black and Gold showed the same resiliency it has been developing all season, posting one of its better offensive games of the season in the third, finishing with a .393 hit average with 13 team kills.
“In some ways we had some favorable match-ups, but I’m not sure that was always the case,” Tabbert said in regards to game three. “It was one of those sets where I didn’t realize how high we hit until I saw stats. We were efficient, and our serve receive was solid.”
Senior Adrienne Lawson dominated offensively throughout the match, finishing with 16 kills and a .412 hitting percentage. Fellow senior Sarah Corbett supplemented Lawson’s performance with her own dominate game, hitting .500 with seven kills on 12 attempts, one solo block and five block assists.
Addy (Adrienne Lawson) had a big day and Sarah (Corbett) was really good, but I still think we need to be more aggressive on the net (defensively),” the coach said.
Cameron will take on Eastern New Mexico (5-19, 1-14) at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Aggie Gym.
“Eastern New Mexico is the third of three really significant home matches,” Tabbert said. “It’s one more step in the process. Tuesday is very significant for our postseason hopes.”
