Lawton, Okla. (Dec. 17, 2011) ¬¬— Cameron’s men’s basketball team defeated a tough Incarnate Word team tonight, 68-62, in the Aggie Gym. The win moves the Aggies into fourth place in the conference.
Cameron (6-3, 4-1) got the best of the Cardinals (6-6, 2-4) in a physical contest. Both teams came out firing, as each team held the lead for a chunk in the first half. Sophomore Desmond Henry and senior Milton Garner helped to keep the Aggies aggressive in the half, as each finished with 10 points. Henry ended the half for the home team with a lay-up, extending Cameron’s lead to five. Henry was placed in the starting line-up for junior Vinicius Telo, who missed the game due to injury.
“Thought Desmond Henry stepped into starting role tonight and played well,” said Head Coach Wade Alexander.
The Cardinals came out aggressive in the second half, forcing the issue with the Aggies and making it a game. With 6:10 left in the game, it was knotted up 48-48, but the Black and Gold exploded after a field goal by sophomore Greg Foster, a three by senior Thomas Razor and a monster-slam from Henry all within a minute and a half. The lead would get extended to 11 with two minutes left before Incarnate Word began fouling to slow down the game. Henry and sophomore Jonathan Patino would convert big free throws down the stretch to seal the victory.
Alexander said he is proud of his guys for the victory, as well as winning the rebounding war, 38-30.
“We were concerned about rebounding, but we were able to rebound better than we have all year.” He said. “Incarnate Word is a great rebounding team. We wanted to win the rebound battle and really lock up defensively, and I thought we really did well defensively. Number 23 (Dionelle Rucker) is their leading scorer; he had 2 points tonight.”
Stopping the opposing team’s playmaker has been the Aggies M.O. all season.
“We want to make someone else beat us and fortunately, lately, teams haven’t been able to get that done,” Alexander said.
Cameron will now prepare for Texas A&M-Kingsville (6-5, 1-2) at 8 p.m. Monday in the Aggie Gym.
