LAWTON, Okla. – Milton Garner and Dylan Gilliam combined for 47 points as the Cameron Aggies (15-9, 5-4 LSC North) defeated the Savage Storm of Southeastern Oklahoma (3-20, 2-7 LSC North) at home in Aggie Gym on Wednesday night, 72-67.
Gilliam, who has been used as an offensive spark off the bench as of late, lead the Aggies in both scoring (24) and rebounds (7) on 7 of 15 shooting (46 percent) including 5 of 12 (41.6 percent) from behind the arc.
Garner added 23 points and pulled down five rebounds.
In what was most certainly a “must win game” for both teams, Head Coach Wade Alexander’s squad stepped up at just the right time.
“It really was a must win game for our team and theirs,” he said. “We’ve got to focus on the next one though and we have a tough game at Texas A&M-Commerce coming up.”
The back-and-forth game featured four lead changes and six ties in the first half alone with the home squad holding their largest margin of the half with 9:46 to go at 22-15. The Aggies went into the break up four at 36-32.
Second half basketball was slightly more one sided with only one tie and the Aggies holding a nine point lead multiple times throughout the 20 minute period.
Clutch free throw shooting by the Aggies coupled by poor long range shooting from the visitors lead the Aggies to their 15th victory of the season.
Southeastern shot just 13.3 percent (2 of 15) from behind the arc and Alexander credited his varying defensive looks to their recent success defending the trey.
“We try to vary our defenses and not let the opponent figure out what we are doing too quickly,” said Alexander. “Our guys are doing a good job getting in their face and forcing bad shots.”
The Aggies now travel to Commerce, Texas to take on LSC North foe Texas A&M-Commerce in yet another crucial game with LSC playoff implications. Tip off is set for 4 p.m.
