Lawton, Okla. (Sept. 17, 2011) ¬¬ After a tough match against Texas A&M-Kingsville, the Cameron Aggies responded emphatically today with a four-game win over Incarnate Word, 24-26, 25-17, 25-9, 25-19.
“We were very focused and competitive from the start,” said Head Coach Doug Tabbert. “Our effort was pretty consistent throughout the match. We played more like we played last week at home.”
When the Aggies (4-3, 3-2) are playing well, they are hard to beat. The Cardinals (5-8, 2-5) found that out today. Cameron pulled out with an early lead in game one, but Tabbert said his team became tentative and allowed the Cardinals to steal the game.
The second game played out much the same, however the Aggies were able to finish off the game for tie the contest at 1-1.
Then Cameron seized the momentum. The Aggies hit .577 in game three, a number which Tabbert said was “absurd,” en route to a 25-9 win. Game four also went the Aggies way, as Cameron pulled out to an eight point lead early. Incarnate Word would cut the lead to four, but could not pull any closer as Cameron pulled out the road victory.
“Everything went our way,” he said. “Offensively we were good. Our serving game gave them all kinds of fits. Everything just clicked.”
Tabbert said the whole team performed well, especially his outside hitters who, again, came through with clutch kills.
“(Adrienne Lawson) hit .385 and had some huge kills for us,” he said. “(Sarah) Corbett hit .500 with not a lot of opportunities but some big kills. Kelle (Carver) also hit .410 and big kills at big times.”
The coach said Julisa Ocasio shined defensively, leading the team with 24 digs. Overall, Tabbert said the entire defense played a very balanced game.
“We held them to .142 and we hit .351,” he said. “When you do that, it should turn out in your favor.”
The Aggies return to action at 8 p.m. central time in Portales, N.M. as they take on the Eastern New Mexico Zias (3-9, 1-4).
