Cameron Volleyball Splits On Opening Day

LAWTON, Okla. (Sept. 3, 2011) — Cameron’s volleyball team got off to a rough start to the season, dropping its first game in Magnolia, Ark. at the Southern Arkansas Tri-Match, but rebounded for a 3-0 shutout in the second.

The Aggies dropped a hard fought five-set match to Southern Arkansas in the opener, 3-2. The Muleriders and Aggies exchanged sets before SAU took the match with a 15-9 victory in the fifth and deciding set. In the second match, Cameron shut out the Texas College Lady Steers 3-0. At the time of this story, stats were unavailable.

Despite the victory, in both matches head coach Doug Tabbert said his team had chances to seize control of the match but failed to do so. One area of struggle was the serving game, which Tabbert said gave the Aggies more of a problem than he thought it would.

“I thought we needed to be a little more consistent,” the first year coach said. “We were inconsistent in every phase. We were decent at a lot of things, but couldn’t get consistent at anything.”

Tabbert said there were bright spots, including the play of two first year players. “Kelle (Carver) was great,” he said. “She gave us plenty of offense. She also blocked well too. Julisa (Ocasio) also had a solid game.”

The coach said that he explained to the girls that the season is a journey and a process, and its only just begun. He said they have work to do, but the team knows that.

“They recognize that we have work ahead of us, and they’re fine with that,” Tabbert said. “We’re just at the beginning.”

The Aggies return home to begin conference play at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Aggie Gym. For more information on Cameron volleyball or to view the stats from today’s game visit www.cameronaggies.com. Stats for Cameron versus Texas College will be available tomorrow.
