CANYON, Texas (Jan. 14, 2012) ¬¬— Cameron’s men’s basketball team picked up a huge conference victory Saturday, going on the road to defeat West Texas A&M 68-64. The win improves the team to 10-3 and 7-1 in conference. The victory is Cameron’s first win in Canyon since 2006.
Despite an early start by the Buffalo (11-4, 5-3), pulling out to a 16-7 lead, the team remained tight throughout the contest, including going to halftime tied at 31.
The Aggies and the Buffs traded leads in the second half, with neither team pulling ahead by more than four points. With just under three minutes to play, the teams found themselves tied at 59. Huge buckets by senior Milton Garner, as well as a rainmaker by senior Thomas Razor and a thunderous dunk by junior Andrew Thomas helped the Black and Gold to secure the victory.
“We had some different players make plays for us tonight,” said Head Coach Wade Alexander. “All the way down the line up sheet. You’ve got to have then when you are on the road. The game went back and forth and in the end, we went up. “
Seniors Thomas Razor, Milton Garner and Walter Battle led the Black and Gold offensively with 22, 16 and 13, respectively. Junior Dol Kutey led the team in rebounds with seven.
“Thomas Razor just played a tremendous game offensively,” Alexander said. “Walter Battle really gave us a lift in the post tonight as well. (Jonny) Patino hit a three in the corner; they (WTAM) gave it to him all last year in the tournament. Then, (at the end of the game) we attacked the press and Country got a dunk. It was huge. Great pass, great play.”
The win, Cameron’s seventh, also moved the team into a tie for seventh place in conference, with Midwestern State losing its first game of the season tonight to Eastern New Mexico, 80-72.
The team will be tested again on the road Wednesday, as it travels to Wichita Falls to take on Midwestern State (13-1, 6-1) at 8 p.m.
