Evans’ 22 kills leads Cameron over UIW, 3-1

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Kathryn Evans’ 22 kills and Julisa Ocasio  tying a program record 36 digs helped the Aggies get a much needed win over Incarnate Word in four sets on Friday night at the McDermott Center 18-25, 25-22, 25-23, 25-20.

Box Score

The match for the Aggies (8-15, 3-9) did not start off well after being dominated early by the Cardinals (7-14, 4-8) who hit .333 compared to CU’s .056.   In the second set, Incarnate Word had Cameron’s number leading 22-17 and looking to put the Aggies back 0-2  heading into the break.

The turning point of the match was following an Aggie time out at that 22-17 mark in set two.  Cameron became unstoppable taking the next eight points in a row to win the set 25-22.

The momentum continued for CU as they went on to take the following two sets 25-23 and 25-20 and getting a needed win in the Lone Star Conference standings.

“We simply weren’t every good in the first set,” said head coach Doug Tabbert.  “We found ourselves late in the second set and took eight in a row from Incarnate Word.  Our ball control was better; we limited our errors, and just played better later in the match.”

Jenna Risoli had another solid night with a double-double ( 50 assists and 15 digs) and Shannon Dulaney put up 17 kills.  As a team, the Aggies tallied 57 kills, 90 digs and 3.0 blocks, with a .159 attack.

The Aggies will be back in action on Saturday at 1 p.m. against Texas A&M Kingsville in what will be a must win match for the team.

“We looked at this weekend as a pair of must win matches for us,” said Tabbert.  “If we want to make the conference tournament and make up some ground we have to do it this weekend.

Standing Situations
As the standings presently sit tonight the Aggies are ninth place, one game back of both Texas A&M Kingsville and Incarnate Word (Texas A&M Kingsville defeated Midwestern 3-2).   A win tomorrow would put Cameron back into the tournament race winning a tie breaker over Kingsville.  A loss on the other hand would put Cameron two games back of Kingsville.  A Midwestern win over Incarnate Word and a Cameron win over Kingsville would create a three way tie for the seventh and eight spots for the LSC Tournament with Cameron still having the tie breaker over Kingsville due to winning both regular season matches.
