Aggie women drop their first contest in Florida

Williams scores 12 in loss

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.—The Cameron University women’s basketball team drops their first game in Florida, as Lynn University beat the Aggies 55-45.

The Fighting Knights got off to a quick seven to nothing lead over the Aggies in the first two minutes. A mix of Cameron turnovers and good shooting from Lynn resulted in an 11 point deficit by halftime. CU was hindered in the first half by 13 turnovers which resulted in eight Lynn points off turnovers. The Aggies found themselves down 21-32 after the first 20 minutes of play.

Cameron shot 31.8% from the field and was 2-11 with an 18.2% three point percentage. They made it to the line nine times and hit 55.6% of those. Alexis Williams led the way with nine points in the first frame with two threes and two rebounds.

The Fighting Knights shot 44.4% from the field and 30% from three, while hitting five of their six free throws.

The lead remained at 10 for most of the first 10 minutes of the second half until a tip-in by Sharna Hoosier narrowed the lead to eight. From then, CU continued to chip into the lead and got it to within five at the ten minute mark.

Lynn then got the lead back up to seven, but a three pointer by Chelsea Stamp got Cameron to within four with three minutes left. After a foul and two free throws, CU lost the advantage of being within four points. Cameron then got into desperation mode and started fouling with a minute left. With a 10 point lead in hand, the Fighting Knights dribbled the clock out to win 55-45.

Cameron improved their shooting in the second half, going 8-23 and shooting 34.8% from the field. Cameron was 4-12 from three in the second half and converted half of their free throws. Thirteen more turnovers by the Aggies was a big part of why Cameron fell short of a comeback.

The Aggies were led in scoring by Alexis Williams with 12 points and four rebounds. Williams was 4-16 from the field and hit three, three point baskets. Hannah Pollart was one point away from a double-double with nine points and 11 rebounds.

Additionally, Chelsea Stamp had seven points and Ali Brown and Brittany Harris had five points each. Lacy Reinke was able to grab six rebounds before fouling out late in the game.

For the game, Cameron shot 32.6% from the field, while shooting 25% from behind the arc and 52.9% from the charity stripe. CU out-rebounded the Fighting Knights 38-34, but lost the turnover battle with a -8 turnover margin.

Lynn shot 36.5% from the field, with a 15% three point percentage and an 82.4% free throw percentage.

With this loss Cameron drops to 2-7 on the year.
