CU women fall to the Lady Buffs in Canyon

Williams breaks 1,000 mark at CU

Box Score CANYON, Texas—Alexis Williams went over the 1,000 point mark, but the Cameron University women’s basketball team suffered a tough loss in Canyon, Texas, to the West Texas Lady Buffs, 70-45.

Cameron had another slow start in the first half. After giving up a quick four point lead, the Aggies were able to bounce back and tie the game up at 10 after a couple three pointers from Chelsea Stamp and Alexis Williams.

The Lady Buffs continued to control the inside as they put up 20 points in the paint in the first 20 minutes, as opposed to CU’s 6 points in the paint. West Texas A&M shot 66.7% from the field and 33.3% from behind the arc and had two players with over 10 points at halftime. The Aggies shot a cold 16.1% from the field and were 2-13 from behind the arc in the first half. 

Cameron converted 80% of their free throws and were winning the turnover battle with four, compared to WT’s five.

The second half was not much better for the Aggies. CU was never able to sustain a rally, due to cold shooting, and very good shooting from WT. The Aggies were outmatched down low, getting out rebounded 33-40, and getting 38 points in the paint score on them, while only scoring 14 of their own in the paint.

CU did shoot better in the second half, with 36% from the field and 35.7% from three. This totaled with the first half shooting gave them 25% from the field, 25.9% from behind the arc, and 76.9% from behind the charity stripe.

WT shot lights out from the field with a 53.4% shooting percentage and three players scoring in double figures.

Cameron did a good job keeping the turnovers down in the first half with only four, but gave up 15 in the second half to end the game with 19, which resulted in 24 WT points off turnovers.

The Aggies were led in scoring by Chelsea Stamp with 12 points and Alexis Williams finished with 11. Additionally, Brittany Harris finished the game with four points and six assists and Hannah Pollart scored six points and grabbed eight rebounds.

The Aggies will head back home for their next game when they will take on the Zias from Eastern New Mexico, on Wednesday, Dec. 12 at 6 p.m. at the Aggie Gym.
