Cameron Loses In OT, 68-65

Box Score San Antonio, Texas (Feb. 10, 2012) ― Cameron’s men’s basketball team battled hard, but failed to seal the victory against Incarnate Word Saturday, losing 68-65 in overtime.

“We’ve got to make free throws,” said Head Coach Wade Alexander, citing the 13-19 finish. “We didn’t miss many, but one point would have won the game (in regulation). We made some mistakes defensively. Those came from not focusing in on timeouts. We’ve got an 11-day break coming up; that could be good for us to refocus.”

Incarnate Word (14-9, 10-6) took control of overtime right off the bat, scoring four consecutive points to takt the early edge. Cameron (13-9, 9-7) took a one point lead with 1:54 left on three free throws by Thomas Razor, but CU failed to build on that momentum, allowing the Cardinals to score the next four points to build a three point lead late in the extra period. The small lead proved too much to overcome, as Cameron fell 68-65.

The Aggies battled back from a four point halftime deficit to tie the game in the second half. Milton Garner played a huge role in bringing Cameron back into the game, going for 14 points in the second half on 6-10 shooting. Garner’s biggest shot came with 10 seconds left and Cameron trailing by one point. The senior stepped back and drained a three to give CU a two point lead with 10 seconds left on the clock. Unfortunately, the Cardinals were able to go down court and convert to send the game into overtime. UIW came out firing on its home court, pulling ahead 17-7 with only 12 minutes to go in the half to set the tone for the game. An 8-1 run, highlighted by a deep three from Thomas Razor, got Cameron to within two of the Cardinals. UIW would again go up by seven at 27-20 with five minutes to go, but again Cameron would answer with a 7-0 run to tie the game. Incarnate Word ended the half with consecutive buckets to take a 33-29 lead into the locker room.

“It wasn’t our offense tonight,” Alexander said. “It really came down to free throws, defense and rebounding. We’ve got to get better at those. (In order to do that) we tweak little things as we go, but we haven’t stayed focused on those things.”

The loss drops Cameron into fifth place in the LSC, as UIW and West Texas A&M each jumped the Aggies with the loss. The bright side is there are still two games left for CU to climb into a better position for post season play. Cameron will now get a 10-day break before taking on Eastern New Mexico in Portales, N.M, followed by West Texas A&M. The Greyhounds are currently in the sixth seed behind the Aggies.

“We need to win these two games for sure,” Alexander said. We need to win them for us mentality, just to get back on track. We want to finish as high as we can in the conference to get a good draw (in the tournament).”
