LAWTON, Okla. – The Cameron University volleyball team took care of business on Tuesday tonight at the Aggie Gym, beating St. Gregory's in straight sets.
After a slow start in set one, Cameron started to pull away when they went on a six point stretch to go up 11-7. They continued to put little runs together and closed out set one 25-15. The Aggies had an amazing .368 attack percentage, while the Cavaliers hit .050.
Just like in set one, the Aggies started slow in the second frame, but used a couple of short runs to get up 16-13. CU returned to form and went on a 9-1 run to end the set 25-14. The Aggies benefited from 13 errors in the set by SGU.
Following the intermission, both teams were knotted up at eight apiece until Cameron scored seven straight points to go up 15-8. After a couple of back and forth points, CU finished the match on another seven point run to end the set and match 25-12.
"Other than the rough start, I was pleased with how we played," said head coach Doug Tabbert. Â "Those are the kind of numbers you hope you can put up against a team like that that has been struggling."
The Aggies were led by Kelle Carver who was near perfect tonight, hitting .542 with 15 kills. Grace Newkirk was also a key hitter, recording 10 kills with a .304 attack percentage. They were assisted by Kayla Hebert, who had 33 helpers and also recorded nine digs. Cameron had a solid night at the net, recording 10 total team blocks. Rebecca Green continued to stifle opposing hitters, recording 4 blocks, while Annelise Carpenter recorded five total blocks.
"Kelle is finding her groove pretty well and we are setting better too and it is good to see Grace come out and put up some numbers."
St. Gregory's got nine kills and nine digs from Tiphani Funk, while Rachel Lucas recorded 17 assists, and Daniella Rivera got 16 digs.
The win snaps a five match losing stream for the Aggies as move to 5-9, while SGU falls to 4-13.
"We've been pressing and our kids and I have been pretty tight. Since we won the right way and not in sloppy fashion, playing effectively and efficiently, it's a good step in the right direction, and hopefully it will change our demeanor a little bit and settle in," added Tabbert.
Cameron will be back in action on Saturday, Oct. 5 to host Midwestern State at 2 p.m. in the Aggie Gym.
