Box Score PORTALES, NM – The struggles to start conference play continued for Cameron after suffering a 70-61 loss at Eastern New Mexico on Wednesday night.
CU (8-3, 0-1 LSC) battled cold shooting from the opening bucket and managed to take a late second half lead before ENMU (3-7, 1-0 LSC) scored 10 unanswered points to shut Cameron down.
"We shot poorly from the field and broke down defensively, those are things we can't do on the road if we want to win," said head
Tom Webb. "We opened up spots on the floor that haven't done defensively all this season tonight. We'll work through it and get ready for West Texas on Saturday."
The Ags went 13 minutes into the game with only one made shot from the field. But despite the early shooting problems for CU, the Zias didn't fare much better shooting just over 28% from the field and never held more than an eight point lead.
Cameron's shooting improved down the stretch but they would trail 30-24 at the half;
Jazzmine Robinson would lead CU with nine points.
In the second half, CU stayed on the Zias heels and trimmed down their nine point deficit to a one point lead with four minutes to go. However, Cameron did not anticipate ENMU's Tori Tucker to go off with four three-pointers in the remaining minutes to push the Zias to the win.
As a group Cameron shot 29.3% from the field and made only three shots from downtown.
Robinson led all scorers on the floor with 21 points,
Ali Brown was CU's only other player in double-figures with 10; both players would also have seven rebounds.
In conference openers, Cameron has only won once since the 2005-06 season.
Cameron will return to action hosting #7 ranked West Texas A&M on Saturday at 2 pm in the Aggie Gym.
