Late Wonder Boy second half run spoils Aggies' night

RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. – Cold shooting in the final two minutes would hand Cameron their first loss of the season, falling 66-64 at Arkansas Tech on Tuesday night.  The Aggies dug themselves out of a 10 point hole only to fall by a Wonder Boy bucket with 22 second remaining to drop CU to 3-1 overall, while ATU moves up to 2-3 this season.

Cameron trailed the Wonder Boys from opening tip in the first half and despite a 47.8 shooting percentage, ATU hit 56 percent on their side of the court to the a sizeable 36-28 lead.  The Aggies spread their offense between eight players with DJ Jackson and Cameron Lee leading CU with six points each. ATU had a pair with eight points and Nick Wayman at 10 points to lead all scorers on the floor.

In the second half, the Aggies used a 9-2 run in the first three minutes to pull within a pair and trail the Wonder Boys 39-37; a couple of possessions later Jamaal Brantley handed CU's first lead of the night at the 14:03 marker.  Cameron extended their lead by six points before they committed four turnovers in a 2:30 minute time span to let ATU back within one (53-52).   A pair of free-throws and a three pointer, mixed in with a 0-7 run at the bucket handed the Wonder Boys a 57-53 lead once again.

Cameron returned the favor and went on an eight point run to retake a 61-57 lead with less than two minutes remaining.  However, the Aggies went cold on the floor and ATU retook a three point, 64-61 lead, off of free-throws with 32 seconds remaining.  In the next possession, Lee knocked down a clutch trey, CU's first made bucket in over a minute to tie the game at 64 each.

Following a CU timeout, ATU on their following possession got a go-ahead jumper with five seconds left to take a two point advantage.  After a pair of timeouts, Cameron could not make a shot happen before the buzzer to fall for the first time this season.

Despite the Aggie cold shooting in the last couple of minutes, they had the edge in shooting 50 percent, to ATU's 46 percent.  Cameron also won the rebounding battle by eight with 32 boards.  The Wonder Boys had five fewer turnovers with 13 and had a slight 14-10 advantage in points off of those turnovers.

Points in the paint were dominated by Cameron with 30; ATU had 18, along with bench points with CU netting 31, compared to eight from Arkansas Tech.

Jackson and Lee both led CU with 14 points; Mike Balogun paced ATU with 17.

The Aggies will remain on the road to visit Springfield, Mo to face East Central and tournament host Drury at their Thanksgiving Classic.
