Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Aggies fall short to #6 West Texas A&M, 64-53

ALLEN, Texas -- The Cameron University women's team took #6 West Texas A&M to the wire, but they would fall 64-53 at the Lone Star Conference Quarterfinal in the Allen Event Center on Wednesday night.

Both teams traded the lead five times with four ties as Cameron stayed within two points of the Lady Buffs with two minutes remaining in the contest.

Heading into their game with Cameron, the Lady Buffs lost only twice previously overall and swept the home and home series against the Aggies.

"Our kids understood the game plan and that they had nothing to lose; this group is going to compete so those are good combinations to have," said head coach Tom Webb.  "This group will fight all the time, I've been coaching for a long time and we knew it was going to be a battle tonight.  I couldn't be more proud of a group...I could tell you tonight when I go to dinner with this team I'm going to cherish every minute of it."

Ali Brown, in her 107th straight game led Cameron with 18 points with five shots from beyond the arc.  Lacy Reinke, who has also went 107 games in a row for Cameron, matched Brown with a team high seven rebounds and came up with three blocks.

For both Brown and Reinke, this was their final game in the Black and Gold.
Jazz WT
Jazzmine Robinson finished with 13 points for Cameron

"At the end of the day they (Brown and Reinke) are great kids," added Webb.  "I have two kids myself with two more on the way, but I would adopt these two in a second."

"They are great in the classroom, they work hard all the time, and they are respectful.  In every recruit that we look for, if we can get these two, we will be in good shape."

Cameron trailed in rebounding 40 to 38 against West Texas A&M but the Aggies shot the ball better; CU went 36.5% (19-52) from the field while WT went 31.7%  (19-60) on their end of the floor.

Cameron kept the Lady Buffs silent for the first three minutes of the game and took an early 6-0 lead.   West Texas overtook the Aggies following a 12-1 run that lasted until Jazzmine Robinson sank a jumper at the 11:11 mark to make it a 16-12 ballgame.

The Lady Buffs continued to pull away and built up a 20-12 lead on Cameron by the eight minute mark, but a Brown layup and a quick five points from Robinson pulled the game within one for CU.   Following a pair of WT free throws, Brown knocked down a shot from downtown to tie the game at 22-22.    Both teams traded buckets before Brown knocked down her fourth three pointer of the game to give CU a 30-29 lead at the half.

Out of the locker room in the second half, Jade Herl gave the Aggies a four point, 33-29 lead off of a shot from beyond the arc.  Despite the lead Cameron couldn't contain West Texas and they would retake a four point, 42-38 advantage off of WT three pointer at the 12:41 marker.

Cameron wasn't done though and back-to-back treys put the Ags ahead 44-42 once again.   On the other end of the court WT benefited from a pair of shots from beyond the arc to swing ahead of CU 48-44 with 10 minutes to go.

The game tied for the fourth time after a Reinke layup and a steal from Robinson that she would toss in herself to lock up both teams at 48 each.

Cameron kept the game within a possession until the 3:34 mark where WT tossed in a pair of free throws to take a 55-51 lead.

A Brittany Harris shot that took a friendly bounce into the bucket pulled CU within two once again before WT was put to the line where they would make a pair of shots to pull away by four (57-53) with two minutes to go.

West Texas nailed in jumper to put them up six (59-53) over Cameron with a minute to go proved to be the difference at the end as they would go on to win 64-53.

Cameron ends their season with a 13-14 overall record.
