Aggies fall to Tarleton State in LSC Tournament Semifinal

STEPHENVILLE, Texas– The Cameron volleyball team fell 3-1 (19-25, 25-22, 22-25, 16-25) to number-one seed Tarleton State in the Lone Star Conference Tournament semifinal Friday evening. Tarleton State moves to the LSC Championship game on Saturday with a 27-5 record, while the 17-10 Aggies await Monday's NCAA Selection Show looking for a spot in the South Central Regional bracket.

Cameron's offense was led by freshman Jordan Williams who had 12 kills in addition to ten digs to earn her ninth double-double on the year. Senior Kat Evans and freshman Jenna Gillean were behind her with nine kills each. Cristina Viera led the team in digs by notching 24, and Tori Luckenbill contributed 32 assists for the Aggies.

On the overall match, Tarleton State had 59 kills and hit a .202 clip, while Cameron had 41 kills and a .066 attacking percentage. The Aggies had the match's only aces with three, and the TexAnns had 12 blocks over Cameron's five.

Early errors plagued Tarleton at the start of set one as Cameron led 9-6, but the TexAnns would work out of the three point deficit, following a CU service error with a kill and block to tie the game at nine. An additional block would put Tarleton ahead by one and the set knotted twice and for a final time at 11-11 before the TexAnns would go on a nine point run to lead 19-11. Tarleton retained its lead to win set one 25-19.

Cameron grabbed the lead to start the second set, but Tarleton tied the game at five with a block and took the 6-5 advantage with a kill. Both sides traded kills and then errors to knot the set at seven until a kill from Evans gave CU the lead back. Cameron fended off the TexAnns through three ties and would take the 14-10 advantage off of Tarleton errors.

Cameron remained ahead until an Aggie ball handling error off a 20-20 tie resulted in the Tarleton lead; however, CU would hold strong, knotting the set at 22 and putting down back-to-back kills from Gillean to reach set point. A Tarleton attack error awarded the Aggies the 25-22 edge to tie the match at one set each.

The Aggies carried their momentum into set three, beginning it with back-to-back kills. The Aggies maintained their lead, staying on top through four ties until three straight TexAnn kills tied the set once more at 21-21 and a CU attack error brought Tarleton State ahead 22-21 for the TexAnns' first lead of the set. Both sides then committed ball handling errors, and Tarleton State would put down two straight kills to take set three 25-22.

Set four tied five times early on and at 9-9, Cameron hit two straight kills to take their first lead, but a Tarleton kill tied it back up at ten for the final time of the set. A CU attack error and three TexAnn kills would bring Tarleton State the lead, which they would retain for the entirety of the set, taking it 25-16 to advance to the tournament final against Angelo State.

Tarleton State was led by Hailey Roberts who had a 24 kills and 17 digs on the match.

Cameron will enter the next few days in limbo awaiting the NCAA Selection Show that will reveal regional bids on NCAA.com beginning at 5:30 p.m. Monday.
