LAWTON– The Cameron men's basketball team defeated Dallas Christian 81-64 in the Aggies' home opener Tuesday evening. Redshirt freshman
JV Long recorded 11 assists, which is sixth most in NCAA Division II, and he is tied with Michael Hardge of Tarleton State for the Lone Star Conference game high assists this season.
The last time the Aggies had a player reach ten or more assists was on Jan. 31, 2015 after
Desmond Henry recorded ten against Midwestern State.
"JV is probably one of the smartest players in the league," head coach
Nate Gamet said. "He understands how to play, and the games are in a slower speed for him. He makes the game simple and doesn't do too much. He does what he can do and the results show it."
The Aggies spread the ball well, notching 14 assists total on the game.
Cameron Lee and
Deondre Ray led CU with 14 points each with Ray shooting 6-7 from the floor in addition to garnering a team high nine boards.
"Overall the guys had pretty good energy and played hard," Gamet said. "We need to do a little bit better job executing at times, playing with pace and playing under control. I thought we were out of control at times and turned the ball over when we didn't need to. If we clean that up we will be in good shape."
Cameron led 47-32 at the half, shooting 62.5 % (20-32) from the field over the Crusaders 34.3% (12-35), but Dallas Christian had the edge from behind the arc, making four treys versus the Aggies' one. In the second half, the Aggies improved their deep game, going 50% from behind the arc off of three good treys while shooting 46.7% (14-30) on the floor.
Cameron edged the Crusaders in rebounds 43 to 34, and the Aggies forced 15 Dallas Christian turnovers with which the Aggies scored 22 points off of. Cameron also scored 26 points off of fast breaks, and 44 of their points came from the bench.
The Crusaders were led by Trey Lindsey who had 11 points and five rebounds, and Anthony McQuary was behind him with nine points.
From the field, CU finished 54.8% (34-62) and DCC had 39.3% (24-61) on the floor.
Next, the Aggies will travel to Springfield, MO for the Drury Classic Nov. 27-28 where they will face Drury and Truman State.
