WEATHERFORD –
Brandi Leal broke Cameron's record for made three pointers in a game in the Aggie women's 83-77 loss to Southwestern Oklahoma Saturday afternoon. The senior from Amarillo, Texas made a career high eight three pointers to break CU's record in addition to hitting the second highest total for three pointers in the nation. Her effort also earned her a career high 26 points.
Despite the milestone, fouls and turnovers cost the Aggies in the tightly contested game as they would fall to 4-3 on the season in the loss to SWOSU. From the field, CU finished 39.7% (29-73) and SWOSU had 43.3% (29-67) on the floor. Behind the arc, the Aggies shot 35% (14-40) while the Lady Bulldogs shot 39.1% (9-23). The charity stripe proved to be the difference with SWOSU finishing 61.5% (16-26) at the line, while the Aggies went 55.6% (5-9).
In the first, Cameron took the lead off an 8-8 tie following a Leal three-pointer and would hold that lead for three minutes with SWOSU coming within a point twice following two successful treys of their own. With CU ahead 17-16, SWOSU took the 18-17 edge from the charity stripe and would hold that lead to end the first quarter ahead 28-24.
The Aggies started the second quarter with a Leal three-pointer to even the spread to one, but SWOSU returned with the 30-27 layup. Cameron tied the game up at 38 with four minutes remaining by forcing turnovers for six points. SWOSU would get in a free throw, and CU took back the lead following a layup, but the Lady Bulldogs answered with two of their own to take a 43-40 lead to the locker room.
At the half, Cameron shot 44.7% (17-38) from the field, with five treys but made only one of three shots at the charity stripe. Meanwhile, SWOSU shot 50% (14-28) from the field, with four three-pointers and went 11-16 from the line.
SWOSU opened second half play with a layup, but a CU free throw and Leal trey brought the Aggies within a point. Cameron then took advantage of a four minute SWOSU scoring drought for eight points, but the Lady Bulldogs tied it up at 48 with a three-pointer. Both sides traded the lead with CU taking the third quarter 64-63 edge.
In the final quarter, play was tightly contested with five lead changes until SWOSU came out on top in the final three minutes 77-76 after a layup. The Lady Bulldogs would fend off CU's scoring from that point forward, allowing only one Aggie free throw to take the game 83-77.
Cameron edged the Lady Bulldogs in rebounding (47-40), and the Aggies would score 20 2nd chance points to SWOSU's eight. Turnovers played a big factor with CU committing 18 to SWOSU's nine and the Lady Bulldogs scored 20 points off of the takeaways.
Leal led the Aggies with a career and game high 26 points. Junior
Dayla Threatt also had a career day, earning a double-double with 19 points and 14 rebounds.
Charron Montgomery was the other Aggie in double figures with ten points.
Southwestern Oklahoma (3-5) was led by Hailey Tucker who obtained 24 points and five rebounds in addition to making eight treys herself.
The Aggie women will return to the court on Dec. 16 for a home match-up with Southeastern Oklahoma State.
