LAWTON – Cameron found its grove as the game progressed to snap a three-game skid and blew past Bacone 100-69 on Sunday afternoon in the Aggie Gym to give CU their first 100 point game in one year.
Despite the final score, both teams were locked into a dog-fight early, and it was a tied ballgame with five minutes left.
The Aggies struggled to pull away from the Warriors early, and CU would hold a one possession for the majority of the half. Cameron's scoring had to come from inside with Pierre making the team's only trey with 2:30 left on the clock. Despite their struggles from the arc, CU went to the locker room with a 10-3 run, leading 39-30, and going 14-for-34 from the field.
Out of the intermission, the Aggies came out blazing hot thanks to a pair of dunks from Brantley to spark the offense. Cameron could hardly miss in the second half going 22-for-34 from the field and after going 1-for-14 to arc in the first 20 minutes, they would knock down seven in the second period.
"I think we did a pretty good job of guarding most of the night," said head coach
Nate Gamet. "We finally started getting some easy buckets. It was nice to see Cam (
Cameron Lee) and (Deondre) Ray come out the second half and knock down a few shots. They've been struggling a bit this year, and they're great shooters. Once they started getting the buckets, it just opened up the flood gates for us."
Six CU players hit double-figures with
Jamaal Brantley leading the charge with 18 points and
Deondre Ray paced the Aggies in boards with seven and he chipped in 17 points.Â
Christian Crockett and
Cameron Lee both hit 14 points and
Tyus Momoh added 13;
Delvonte Pierre came up with 10 points.
JV Long led the Aggies with five assists and the team would shoot 54.5 percent from the field.
For the Warriors, Brandon Chatman had a game high 20 points, with BC shooting 41.4 percent as a group.
Cameron controlled the rebounding battle by 16 over Bacone with 46 and limited their turnovers to only three. Inside the paint, CU had 52 points and 42 bench points.
Gamet continued, "at the beginning of the year we knew we had a deep bench that could score and do good things offensively and defensively. They did a good job tonight coming in and just continuing where our starters picked off."
Cameron will be back in action on Tuesday, Dec. 15 where they will travel to Alva to face Northwestern Oklahoma. Â
"The big thing is we don't have to change much going into the next game," Gamet said. "Defensively, there are some things we can fine tune. With rebounding there were a few mishaps where we slept on them and gave them eight to ten easy buckets that we can clean up by taking those away. If we can keep a team under 60 we will be in good shape."
