STEPHENVILLE – The Cameron women's basketball team continued their most recent winning streak, taking down Tarleton State on the road Saturday, 65-62 for their third straight win. The win gives the Aggies their fifth straight win over TSU as well as moves them to 12-8 this season with a 9-2 Lone Star Conference mark.
Cameron shot over 51 percent from the field in the win, but only converted on three of their 12 three point attempts. They also shot 75 percent from the free throw line. CU was out-rebounded 41-35 rebounds, and turned the ball over 22 times, 10 more than TSU.
Charron Montgomery came off the bench and led the Aggies with 15 points, going 9-10 from the charity stripe. LSC leading scorer
Jazzmine Robinson was held to only two points in the first half, but rebounded to score 12 in the second half to tally 14 for the game. Additionally,
Jade Herl had 13 points, going 3-5 from behind the arc, while
DJ Vallier led the Ags with nine rebounds and two blocks.
Tarleton State shot just 30 percent from the field, while going 40 percent from three point range and hitting 10-16 from the charity stripe. The TexAnns were led by Kathy Thomas who had 26 points, while Ikpeaku Iwobi recorded a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
Both teams started off the first half slow, scoring a combined 24 points through the first 10 minutes of the game. Cameron broke a 14-14 tie at the 8:26 mark and kept the lead through the rest of the first half while holding off the TSU to head into intermission with a 28-23 lead. The Ags were an even 50 percent from the field in the first frame, and was 2-8 from three and 2-4 from the line, with Herl scoring eight in the first 20 minutes. TSU shot just below 25 percent in the first half.
Cameron held the lead through the first part of the second half, but Tarleton State fought back to tie it up multiple times. After The TexAnns took a 47-45 lead at the 7:45 mark, Robinson powered the Aggies to a nine point lead with 2:27 left in the game. TSU made a small comeback but it wasn't enough as a TexAnn three pointer was all for not in the final seconds and CU secured the win 65-62.
Tarleton State moves to 12-8 on the season with the loss and falls below .500 in the LSC with a 5-6 mark.
Although, the Aggies got their ninth win of the conference season, they remain in the third spot in the LSC Standings since both West Texas A&M and Midwestern State won as well.
Cameron will remain on the road for their next contest as they will head to Eastern New Mexico on Feb. 11 for a 6:30 p.m. central time start. Â
