Aggies edge Lions to sweep doubleheader at Commerce

COMMERCE, Texas – Cameron hung in late and edged out Texas A&M-Commerce by a run in a doubleheader sweep at Commerce on Wednesday.

The games were the first in a over a week and second doubleheader in 16 days for the Aggies who pushed their winning streak to eight games and are off to a program best 15-2 start.   Cameron also made history against the Lions who are in their first year as a program by handing them their first home losses.

However, Wednesday's doubleheader won't count toward CU's Lone Star Conference record due to league rules disallowing make up dates for conference series' missed due to weather.

Cameron threatened early with a leadoff hit and walk but they would come up empty in the opening frame.  In the bottom half of the second, the Lions managed to get a pair of runners on with two outs and they would hit a single but a force out at third base would end the inning.  Later in the home half of the fourth A&M-Commerce opened the inning with a triple but Kelsey Watson would use 22 pitches to strike out the next three hitters to end the Lion scoring threat.

In the sixth, Cameron got a two out triple from Macy McKay but a pop up ended the inning.  After a scoreless half by the Lions, Misty Dooley opened the seventh with a triple and a ground out by Chelsea DeLong gave CU their only run of the game.

Watson (6-1) would go the distance and toss a six hit shutout with six strikeouts.

The nightcap was more of a rollercoaster contest for CU where they would need to come from behind early after A&M-C scored two to start the game.

Breezy McComas homered in the second and the Aggies would scratch two more runs to take the lead in the third.  However the Lions would tie the game in the bottom half of the inning before McComas hit her fifth homer of the season to retake a 4-3 lead in the fourth.

After a scoreless fifth, the Aggies tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the sixth before escaping a bases loaded no out jam with only a run given up win the bottom half of the inning.

In the seventh, the Lions opened the inning with two walks and advanced a base off a wild pitch.  Sonora Zukerman who came into the game in the sixth got the next two batters out before allowing a game tying single to push the contest to extra innings.

A fielder's choice in the next frame turned out a game winner for the Ags with McComas reaching and a error by the Lions after a ground out would allow her to score.

Zukerman (5-1) tossed the final three innings for the win, Katelyn Craker started the game for CU with five innings of work and four runs given up in the no-decision.

Cameron will open their Lone Star Conference season at home with a four game series with Texas A&M-Kingsville this Friday and Saturday.
