ALLEN, Texas – A pair of second half runs by Angelo State stopped Cameron's season in the Lone Star Conference semifinals falling 76-53 on Friday afternoon in Allen.
Cameron had an early second half advantage on the number-2 seeded Rams but they could not slow down a Ram offensive attack that shot 62.0 percent from the field.
"Angelo did a good job of pressuring our shooters, it gave us some opportunities to attack the basket," said head coach Nate Gamet. Â "I thought we did a really good job of handling the pressure, we just weren't able to convert and knock those down. If we would have done it like we did the first half, then they probably would have had to help off of our shooters a bit more and given us a few more clean looks. They just made some really good adjustments that affected us in the second half."Both
Deondre Ray and
Jamaal Brantley led the Aggies with 13 points, the team wrapped up the day shooting 39.2 percent from the field. Cameron would go 50 percent from the arc with Ray hitting three.
"It was a rough game, they (ASU) never really stopped me from getting good looks, I had those all night," said Jamaal Brantley. "I just wasn't able to convert, I had an easy layup in the last three minutes that I missed. It was like I was hitting the tough shots, but I missed the easy ones. It was one of those crazy nights, I guess."The contest was also the end of a five year career for
Desmond Henry who had eight points and will finish with 1,008 in an Aggie uniform.Â
Angelo State's inside presence and ability to score off CU turnovers also proved to be a major difference with ASU getting 42 points inside the paint and 26 off miscues from the Aggies; the Rams would also take the rebounding battle 28 to 21.
ASU had 12 different players scoring with Chris Jones leading both teams with 22 points.
Cameron opened the contest with a 10-4 early advantage on the Rams but a four minute scoring drought allowed ASU to tie the game at 10 each with 12:47 left in the first half. The Rams continued to push ahead of the Aggies and they would open up an eight point lead (20-12) lead with 7:48 left.  However, CU chased down the Rams after a pair of three pointers from
DJ Jackson and a tip-in by Brantley to get the Aggies within one (24-23). Both teams traded buckets but it would a tied 30-30 ball game at the half.
After getting the lead early out of the locker room, Cameron was silenced for over five minutes while Angelo State went on an 8-0 run to take a 45-38 lead with 12 minutes to go. Cameron would close the gap down to five but another seven unanswered points closed out the game in favor in the Rams.
Cameron will wrap up their season with a 13-15 overall record.Â
"We are excited for next year," added Gamet. Â "Obviously, we hate to lose Tank, Des, and Matt. Â Des has been here with me for five years, so it's going to be weird in the locker room next year when I look around and he isn't there and with Tank, everywhere we go, everybody knows him. Â Matt could have really helped us next year as well, but we have a lot of guys returning and a lot of young kids sitting out."
"Hopefully we can come back again next year. We haven't advanced past the first round very many times, so to do that gives the guys coming back a lot of confidence that we can go play with anybody in the league. I think this was really good for us, so we are excited about the opportunity."
