Aggies rally past Angelo State at NCAA Regional

CANYON – Cameron rallied from a two run deficit and beat Angelo State 5-4 in the opening game of the NCAA South Central Regional on Friday.

The Aggies got three key RBIs from Sonora Zukerman as CU took their fifth straight against the Rambelles and their 40th victory of the season; both teams have played six times in two weeks.

"The kids played tough, anytime you play someone as many times as we have in the last two weeks it gets tougher to beat them," said head coach Rodney DeLong.    "We fell behind early and battled back, I'm just proud of the girls and how they fought."

"We wanted to raise the bar this season and winning 40 games was one of them, whoever we play tomorrow it's going to be tough, and another challenge for us."

In the opening frame, Angelo State capitalized off a one out triple to take an early one run advantage on the Aggies.   After two innings where CU left two runners stranded, Chelsea DeLong opened the third with a triple to the right center field wall, Tara Martini followed up with a sac fly to score the tying run.

Quickly in the fourth, ASU opened the inning with a leadoff walk which would end up at third with one out.  A short chopper to Kelsey Watson provided for a force out at home.   Despite the tag out at the plate by the Aggies, the Rambelles next batter hit a homer that barely sailed over the left field wall to go up 3-1.

In the fifth the Aggies managed to load the bases and full count walk from Paige Daino got CU one back.  Zukerman followed up with a three pitch double off the wall to put the Ags up 4-3 on the Rambelles.

During the sixth inning the Aggies got an insurance run after they loaded the bases with two outs and Zukerman singled to right field to score Macy McKay in from third.   The extra run proved to be useful after ASU hit a one out homer to center to get within one.  Angelo State later put the tying run on but Watson would record her sixth strikeout to end the game.

Angelo State outhit the Aggies by two with 10 hits, but CU batters were issued nine walks.

Watson moves to 19-8 this season as the Aggies will go to 40-16 overall, Angelo State will drop to 33-16-1.

The Aggies will play at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, should they win the Aggies will advance to the championship on Sunday.
