LAWTON – A late match rally by the Aggies paved the way for a non-conference victory over Southern Nazarene (25-27, 23-25, 25-15, 25-12, 15-6) on Saturday afternoon. Cameron remains undefeated at 11-0 on the season and 2-0 in conference play.
Cameron was led by sophomore
Cristina Viera, who broke the school record for digs in a match with 45. Viera said, "It feels pretty good. I didn't know about the record; I just played for the team. We were very excited and teamwork brought us the record and win."
Offensively, freshman
Jordan Williams led the Black and Gold in kills with 15, followed by freshman
Jenna Gillean who added 12. Freshman
Kayla Allen and senior
Kat Evans each had ten kills, while Evans contributed 17 digs to record her seventh double-double this year. Freshman
Tori Luckenbill had 41 assists for the Ags.
Cameron and Southern Nazarene matched total team blocks (10.0) and service aces (8). However, the Aggies led the Crimson Storm in total kills, 57 to SNU's 45, and digs, 104 to SNU's 95. Cameron ended the match with a .182 attacking percentage versus SNU's .045 hitting percentage.
Cameron had trouble closing the first two sets of the match. In set one, the Aggies got off to a quick 4-0 start. The Crimson Storm steadily climbed until the set tied at eight. The score would tie seven more times and set one saw five lead changes. With the set knotted at 25, a kill by SNU's Courtney Bowie put the Crimson Storm up by one. After a Cameron timeout, SNU captured the set, 25-27 after an attack error on Evans.
The Aggies stayed out of the Crimson Storm's reach for the majority of set two until late errors began to unravel CU. With Cameron up 23-21, an SNU kill by McKenna Qualls followed by a service ace from Elyse Berlin tied the set at 23. After a CU timeout, Qualls added another kill and a block to award SNU the second set, 23-25.
In the third set, the score and lead alternated three times early until the Aggies took charge off a 4-4 tie. Cameron scored four consecutive points to lead 8-4 after kills from Williams and Gillean and two attack errors by SNU. The Black and Gold never let off its lead to salvage the match and take the third set, 25-15. Cameron ended the set with a .182 attacking percentage while holding SNU to -.020 hitting clip.
With the momentum on Cameron's side, the Aggies surged set four. After a 2-1 lead, the Aggies scored nine consecutive points off of seven SNU errors and two kills by Williams to bring the score up, 11-1. Errors continued to plague the Crimson Storm as the fell to the Aggies in the fourth set, 25-12 after the Aggies held them to a  -.041 attacking percentage. Cameron had 11 kills, with six of them from Williams.
Cameron furthered its 3-1 lead in the fifth set by scoring nine consecutive points over SNU to lead, 11-2. The Aggies controlled the remainder of the set by holding SNU to a -.087 hitting percentage to win, 15-6.
Southern Nazarene (5-10) was led by McKenna Qualls who had a double-double with 12 kills and 15 digs, while Abbey Bell contributed 37 digs.
Next, Cameron will host Eastern New Mexico at 7 p.m. on Sept. 29 for a Lone Star Conference match in the Aggie Gym.
