Cameron topples Texas A&M-Kingsville on road, 73-65

KINGSVILLE, Texas – The Aggies extended their winning streak to three with a 73-65 win over Texas A&M-Kingsville Saturday night. The victory marks the first time since the 2010-11 season that Cameron has defeated the Javelinas on the road.

Additionally, Cameron (12-7, 5-2 LSC) is the only LSC team to pick up a road victory on the night as Tarleton State, Midwestern State, and Texas A&M-Commerce each fell at their respective away contests.

Deondre Ray scored 14 points and grabbed ten boards for his second double-double of the week with 2013 being the last time an Aggie achieved a back-to-back double-double.
James Cross had a career high 13 rebounds to go with 11 points for his first career double-double. JV Long led the Aggies in scoring with 17 points and five assists.

The first half was an even battle with a 28-28 tie at the break. Cameron shot 38.5% (10-26) from the field, 33.3% (2-6) behind the arc, and 75% (6-8) at the line. Meanwhile, Kingsville shot 31.3% (10-32) on the floor, 18.2% (2-11) from out deep, and 50% (6-12) at the charity stripe. Each side traded the lead three times.

The second half opened up with more contested action as both teams traded the lead four times. Nine minutes in, TAMUK would grab a 44-48 lead with DJ Weathers draining back-to-back three-pointers. CU then experienced a three minute scoring drought brought upon by cold shooting allowing the Javelinas to open their largest lead of six.

However, Cameron would get the final advantage at the 5:24 marker on a 7-0 run to lead 59-57. The Javelinas would get within 3 points twice, but the Aggies held strong to open their largest lead of eight with 32 seconds remaining and drain the clock to win 73-65.

CU improved its shooting in the second to 51.9% (14-27) for 45.3% total from the field. They also went 4-for-10 behind the arc and 21-for-29 at the charity stripe. TAMUK ended the game at 32.8% (20-61) from the field and shot 6-for-23 beyond the arc and 19-for-33 at the line.

The Aggies edged the Javelinas in rebounds 50 to 34. CU turned the ball over 19 times to the Javelinas' 11, with TAMUK recording 20 points off the takeaways. Cameron's bench accounted for 22 points.

Texas A&M-Kingsville (9-8, 1-5 LSC) was led by Troy Jones who scored 17 points and recorded a team high 12 rebounds.

Cameron will remain on the road for their next two contests and will visit Midwestern State on Jan. 30.
